GENDER PERFORMANCE AND LIFE WRITING
Summary
My research concernes the different interpretations that discuss Michel Foucault’s book of a nineteenth century french
hermaphrodite. The standpoint I am operating with diverges from the classical, genre-centered approach of the autobiography and
urges the attachement of antrophology and literature that is grounded in the pursuit of cultural, social, political and ideological
elements that influence the production and interpretation of life writing. From this point of view autobiography is no longer a selfreferential
production but in a specific context includes the refined influences and confrontations between social, cultural,
institutional normes and the self-autonomous subject as the representation of a unique life course. This survey examines the
problematic aspects of gender identity and self-autonomy that go beyond the interpretation of poetical/rhetorical categories, and
supposes the ethics of life writing. From this point of view the autobiographical subject is not stabilized but is in a continuous
movement, reaching his temporary identity by the help of Self-techniques.
