REACTIONS TO THE PLAGUE (A CHOREOGRAPHIC AND ICONIC INVESTIGATION). A SPASM IMAGINARY
Abstract
The study explores the ways in which the imaginary of the plague was enlarged by a double process of codification and decodification.
The dissemination and reflection of the concept of medical plague is visible in painting, in dance and in image. In this
context, the cultural field can be considered as the new environment whose purpose is to explain the pestilential mystery by
including and adapting some of the medical aspects of the plague in its areas with the help of its specific methods.
First of all, the paper explains the analyze of the reactions to the plague and it concludes that there are two types of interacting
with this disease: the immobility and the race for life. These attitudes can be observed in Bruegel’s work The triumph of Death.
Then, the study focuses on Saint Vitus dance, The dance of Death, the flagellants movement and the patron of the plague, Saint
Roch, which are evaluated upon their process of illustrating the characteristics of the plague and by their power to provide
solutions for the aspects involved.
