TIME STRUCTURE OF PÉTER NÁDAS’ AND PÉTER FORGÁCS’ SAJÁT HALÁL (APPROXIMATELY: HIS OWN DEATH)<br />
Summary<br />
Saját halál, the short story is a narrativization of a liminal experience of Péter Nádas: it narrates about those three and a half minutes<br />
which cannot be narrated (and still) – it tells about that something which happens on the borderline of being and not-being, which has not<br />
been familiar to him until that moment, thus he has to find a notion, a verb to express it. In German: umkippen, in French: basculer. And in<br />
Hungarian? Nádas’ short story and Forgács’ film – among others – is in search of this verb; these works show the explorative use of<br />
language, the search of the verbal and visual representation of this sensuous and other-worldly „travel”, as in this experience everything<br />
has to be redefined: the narrator has to re-position himself in space and time, and first of all: he has to re-create his attitude to space and<br />
time.<br />
Thus, I intended to study the time conception of Nádas’ volume and Forgács’ film (the time horizon of the reception, the time relations<br />
between story and narration, the relationship of voice to visual representation, and all of these aspects in their constellation), paying<br />
attention to particularities of time use in these different media, but also underlying that I did not intend to do it out of a contrastive purpose,<br />
rather than with the purpose of showing how these different media have effects on each other, showing the experience of no man’s land<br />
between them.<br />
