9.1.17 PSCST has made pioneering efforts for promotion of value addition of<br />

medicinal plants like amla and lemongrass in <strong>Punjab</strong>. A project has been undertaken for<br />

promotion & production of neem based pesticides in the state which involves low cost<br />

technology for preparation of neem kernel powder & its field application.<br />

9.1.18 No expenditure was incurred during 2008-09 and 2009-10 and 2010-11.<br />

SR-10 Comprehensive programme to assess prevalence of genetic disorders and<br />

generate awareness among rural women regarding their causes and<br />

preventive measures<br />

9.1.19 Genetic disorders/diseases (birth defects) are those diseases which run in<br />

families. A number of genetic disorders/birth defects (more than 5000) occur in Indian<br />

population. It is estimated that about 13 lac children are born with major birth defects/genetic<br />

disorder every year in India. A major part of population in the state of <strong>Punjab</strong> lives in rural<br />

areas and the awareness pertaining to the scientific basis of genetic disorders as well as their<br />

possible preventive measures is lacking in villages.<br />

9.1.20 Under this scheme, no expenditure was incurred during 2008-09 and 2009-<br />

10. No outlay is provided in Annual Plan 2010-11 and <strong>2011</strong>-<strong>12</strong>.<br />

SR-11 Capacity Building on Bio-diversity issues in <strong>Punjab</strong><br />

9.1.21 During 2008-09, as per the recommendation of the Working Group of the<br />

<strong>Planning</strong> Commission of India, the scheme has been transferred under the sub-head “Ecology<br />

and Environment” with code EE-7.
