polytechnics and 119 self financed polytechnic colleges in the state. To make the technical<br />

education system responsive to the needs and requirements of industry, action has been<br />

initiated on many fronts. An allocation of Rs. 50.91 crore is provided in the Annual Plan<br />

<strong>2011</strong>-<strong>12</strong>.<br />

133. For enhancement of skill development and employability of rural youth, state<br />

government is upgrading six technical institutions into multidisciplined academies with Rs.<br />

82.00 crore project assistance from NABARD. NABARD has already released Rs. 40.06<br />

crore against its share of Rs. 61.87 crore. Under this scheme, polytechnics would have<br />

engineering courses and as well as 10+2 classes and similarly, engineering colleges would<br />

have polytechnics and 10+2 classes. An amount of Rs. 35.00 crore is provided for this project<br />

in the Annual Plan <strong>2011</strong>-<strong>12</strong>. Besides, the <strong>State</strong> is in the process of setting up seven<br />

polytechnic colleges in the <strong>State</strong> in seven districts under the centrally sponsored scheme<br />

‘Setting up of new polytechnics in the districts where no government polytechnic exists at<br />

present’. The approximate cost per institution would be Rs. <strong>12</strong>.30 crore and it would be built<br />

on 8-9 acres of land. Government of India has already accorded its approval and released Rs.<br />

35.00 crore under the scheme. The construction work has been started for these polytechnics.<br />

134. The <strong>State</strong> has initiated the process to bring improvement in teaching, training<br />

and learning facilities under the centrally sponsored programme “Implementation of<br />

Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP-II) (75:25)”. During <strong>2011</strong>-<br />

<strong>12</strong>, Thapar University Patiala and 6 Engineering Colleges affiliated with <strong>Punjab</strong> Technical<br />

University will be covered under the programme. The programme will help to produce high<br />

quality engineers for better employability and scaling up of postgraduate education and<br />

demand driven R&D and innovation. An amount of Rs. 13.55 crore is provided in the<br />

Annual Plan <strong>2011</strong>-<strong>12</strong> which includes state share of Rs. 3.39 crore.<br />

135. The state government has already provided 513 acres of land at village Phul<br />

Kalan for the establishment of Indian Institute of Technology, Roopnagar. First academic<br />

session (2008-09) was conducted from the campus of IIT, Delhi. From July, 2009, the IIT<br />

has started functioning from Government Polytechnic for women, Roopnagar. Government<br />

of India needs to begin the work of construction of a permanent building.<br />
