These prestigious institutions would be of great help to the students of <strong>Punjab</strong> and the region.<br />

Besides Science City set up at Kapurthala at a cost of Rs. 100 crore is a big draw among the<br />

school students.<br />

169. The state government has launched a major programme (total project cost- Rs<br />

615 crore) for cleaning up Budha Nallah which carries the waste of Ludhiana city and<br />

empties into the Sutlej river and Holy Bein, the sacred but polluted rivulet which empties into<br />

river Beas. Three sewage treatment plants (STP) of total capacity of 311 MLD have already<br />

been commissioned and would be upgraded so that entire sewage of Ludhiana is treated. A<br />

Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) of 100 MLD capacity at village Pholariwala & 20 MLD<br />

capacity at Phagwara has been installed. A common effluent treatment plant (CETP) has<br />

been installed at focal point, Phase-VIII, Ludhiana for the treatment of effluent generated by<br />

electroplating industries. The state government has constituted SPV for operation of the said<br />

CETP. The <strong>Punjab</strong> Pollution Control <strong>Board</strong> has persuaded all the small scale electroplating<br />

industries to join CETP to achieve zero liquid discharge. The 1st module of CETP at leather<br />

complex Jalandhar has been upgraded and is now in operation on regular basis. The 2nd<br />

module of CETP has also been commissioned. Government of India does not permit the<br />

inclusion of cost of land and conveyance system in the cost of CETP/STP. The GoI has been<br />

requested to include this cost and also give priority to the states which have drinking water<br />

supply based on river water. 4 common bio-medical waste treatment facilities have been<br />

developed at Mohali, Ludhiana, Amritsar and Pathankot for proper treatment and disposal of<br />

bio-medical waste generated in the whole state.<br />

NON CONVENTIONAL SOURCES OF ENERGY<br />

170. As per the central and state government guidelines, PEDA has made a special<br />

programme to undertake the conservation of energy in domestic, commercial, agriculture and<br />

industrial sector for effecting saving of about 10% by the end of 11th plan and up to 20% by<br />

the end of <strong>12</strong>th plan equivalent generation capacity of 1000 MW. Steps have been taken for<br />

introduction of CFL's and energy efficient lighting in the state.<br />

171. The government has initiated a series of programmes for generation of power<br />

from renewable sources of energy. 30 Mini-Hydel Projects of 37 MW capacity have been<br />

commissioned and 33 more such projects have been allotted to various agencies. 32 bio mass<br />
