Abstract
Dall’altro lato alcuni studi-pilota suggeriscono
che la distanza tipologica tra italiano e cinese non ostacola l’apprendimento di
elementi della morfosintassi. La colpa dell’abbandono potrebbe dunque non essere la
distanza tipologica tra cinese e italiano, ma l’innaturale tabella di marcia del programma
Marco Polo, l’abitudine allo studio mnemonico, l’isolamento culturale e sociale degli studenti
cinesi e la loro scarsa propensione all’interazione orale in classe e fuori dalla classe.
How difficult is L2 Italian for Chinese students? The grammar/processing distinction in
SLA and FLT studies
There is substantial work claiming that the typological distance between Italian and
Chinese hinders the acquisitions of Italian by “Marco Polo” students. Here I suggest
that the processing/grammar divide hypothesis adopted by the “glottodidattica
sperimentale” allow us to see things quite differently. While the detection of implicit
(procedural) grammatical representations simply lays beyond the possibility of
traditional corpus-based approaches, the analysis of processing measures is more likely
to reveal whether Chinese students experience difficulties because of the grammar of
their mother tongue or rather because their processing habits differ from that of
alphabetical learners (which is a different thing). In fact, two pilot-studies suggest that
Chinese students and European learners of L2 Italian pattern alike in respect of both their
grammatical intuitions and their processing measures. Rather than typological distance,
recency of instruction, cultural isolation and lack of interaction with native speakers might
be the main factors in slowing down our Chinese students’ learning rate.
