Middle East in Europe (EUME) at the Berlin-based
Forum Transregionale Studien and the ‘Center for
Translation Studies’ of the American University in
Cairo invite 24 doctoral and postdoctoral scholars of
Comparative Literature, Cultural Anthropology, Middle
East Studies, Political Science, and Sociology to

� International Workshop: "Turning Point 1517.
Literary Perspectives from the Eastern Mediterranean",
University of Halle-Wittenberg, Germany,
21-22 September 2012
The year 1517 was a momentous turning point for the
Arab Middle East. The newly established Ottoman
rule not only initiated change in the administrative,
political, economic and societal spheres. It also transformed
cityscapes and ways of looking at the world
and at the self. To learn more about the impact of this
“cultural revolution” is the aim of this conference.
The main focus is a close examination of such transformations
in the literary production of the Eastern
Mediterranean that can be related to the turning point
of 1517.

“Foundational Coexistences Conference”, Karabuk,
Turkey, 24-26 September 2012
The conference largely aims to look at the Ottoman
Empire from the edges in terms of space and actors
mainly from the late eighteenth century up until the

end of the First World War. Themes are ranging from
the contention between the imperial center and provinces
to Muslim and non-Muslim communities to foreigners
and missionaries to religion and law to education
to heterodox communities to land administration
and fiscal systems to the demise of ancien regime.

– What is in a Period? ‘Jāhiliyya’,
‘ʿAbbāsid’, and ‘Arab Spring’ in Arabic Historical
Writing”, ISMC, Aga Khan University/SOAS,

The Arabic historical tradition has known many different
ways of marking time in the interests of religions,
dynasties, nations, and social groups. Authors
have used literary and rhetorical means to create and
sustain new periods, and established notions have often
been recycled and endowed with new meaning.
The concept of Jāhiliyya has been reworked many
times, and dynasties such as the Umayyads and
ʿAbbāsids have taken on new significance in discourses
of modern nations. New notions can come to
life, such as, in the nineteenth century, the Crusading
period as one of anti-colonial resistance. Today, the
Arab Spring, a new period, has known its own markers
of time, in Egypt, for example, named days are
now part of national history, including “the Day of
Rage” (yawm al-ghaḍab) and “the Friday of Departure”
(Jumʿat al-raḥīl).
