the Bedouin Component: Features and Tensions

Orient-Institut Beirut in collaboration with the Collaborative
Research Centre “Difference and Integration”
(SFB 586) in Halle and Leipzig invite scholars
to propose papers along the following broad themes:
The Bedouin and the Arab East in history – Identity
claims and assignments – Conflict management and
violence.

� Workshop and Colloquium: “Cataloguing of Islamic
Manuscripts”, University of Naples “L’Ori -
entale”, 6-7 December 2012
The Journée d’études (6 December), Cataloguing of
Islamic Manuscripts (Work in Progress) is a workshop
devoted to some current projects of the Series
Catalogorum, the presentation of the manuscript collections
under the process of cataloguing, and various
case studies, in which both researchers and PhD students
are invited to participate.
The Colloquium (7 December) is dedicated to Codex
and Text. The use and relevance of codicology,
paleography and illumination for textual studies. Its
aim is to highlight the relation between text and manuscript
support, and focus on interrelations between
codicological studies and textual studies in the research
on the history of Islamic manuscript tradition.

� International Conference: "Turkish Migration in
Europe – Projecting the Next 50 Years", Regent’s
College London, 7-9 December 2012
Organized by Regent’s Centre for Transnational Studies
(RCTS), London Centre for Social Studies
(LCSS), Turkish Migration Studies Group at Oxford
University (TurkMIS).
The conference aims at elaborating the patterns of
Turkish migration, future prospects, and potential
challenges in a changing Europe. We also aim to open
up the discussion by including the internal and international
migration nexus as well as diverse and potentially
competing destination countries as part of the
broader Turkish transnational migration experience.

� International Winter School: “Philologies Across
the Asias: The Translation, Transmission and
Transformation of Knowledge in the Early Modern
World”, Delhi, 10-21 December 2012
The Winter School aims to explore, from an intellectual
and global history perspective, the role that textual
practices, language studies and archival policies
have played in the constitution of knowledge across
Asia roughly since 1500. The Winter School will shed
light on the mobility of texts, languages and textual
practices across the cultural geographies of Asia – focusing
on Arabic, Syriac, Armenian, Turkish, Sanskrit,
Persian, the vernaculars across India and East
Asia, among other linguistic and cultural realms.

the Middle East: New Histories of Place and
Event", School of Oriental and African Studies,
University of London, 13-15 February 2013
The conference is part of the research project, jointly
funded by the British Arts and Humanities Research
Council (AHRC) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.
This conference seeks to develop new discussions
on the relationship between public violence and urban
politics, societies and cultures – a topic that despite its
importance and relevance to contemporary events has
not yet been the subject of systematic academic interest.
The conference is open to papers dealing with cities
and towns of the Arab world, Iran and the Ottoman
Empire/Turkey in the early modern and modern
periods, approximately from the late 18th Century to
