KONFERENZANKÜNDIGUNGEN FORTHCOMING CONFERENCES
This conference aims to explore the government of
cities, and not only big cities, in the Arab and Muslim
world, in light of the recent political uprisings and the
challenges of urbanization. The first purpose of the
conference is to get an overview of the diversity of
urban governance in the Arab and Muslim World and
to identity the different actors, their powers, and limits
on their agency. The second purpose of the conference
is to consider the process of urban management
over the short- and long-term.

� International Colloquium: “Revolts and Transitions
in the Arab World: Towards a New Urban
Agenda?” French Center for Research in Cairo
(CEDEJ), 7-9 November 2012
The objective of this conference is to (re)consider
processes of urbanisation and urban practices, by the
yardstick of the political, economic and social issues
relevant in the region since the beginning of the decade.
Researchers in social sciences and experts on
Maghreb, Middle-East and Arabian Peninsula will
compare their different points of view. Thus, this colloquium
aims to contribute to the revitalization of urban
studies in the Arab world, as aligned to economic
and political analysis.
Five topics structure this call for contributions:
1. The urban dimensions of revolts
2. Living in cities in revolt and transition
3. Legacies of the past: details and questions about
urban action of the « former regimes »
4. Elections and new political powers: the urban
agenda in question
5. Rethinking sustainable urban development: proposals
from civil society and silent partners

� First Global Conference of the Association for
Middle Eastern Public Policy and Administration
(AMEPPA): "Public Policy and Administration in
the Middle East", Rabat, Morocco, 8-9 November
2012
The conference will explore the dynamics of emerging
governance models that can address the uncertainty
and turbulence gripping the region in the aftermath
of the Arab Spring. Leading voices in public policy
and administration will present their perspectives on
these challenges.

Workshop: “Women and Political Activism in
Egypt”, University of Manchester, 15-17 November
2012
This workshop will revolve around themes related to
the work of women activists from Egypt, particularly
those who have made significant contributions to the
revolutionary process whether before, during, or after

the revolution. A number of Egyptian women activists
will be invited as keynote speakers and contributors to
the workshop. Please submit an abstract of around
300 words and a short bio of 100 words by 24 July
2012.

Organised by the Zentralasien-Seminar of the Humboldt
Universität zu Berlin in cooperation with the
Competence Network Crossroads Asia. Conflict –
Migration – Development.
We take the geographical area stretching from Eastern
Iran to Western China and from the Aral Sea to
the Arabian Sea as starting point of research and investigate
the moves of people as well as the flows of
ideas and resources in this geographical region and
beyond. At the core of research is the importance of
mobility – spatial and social – in specific issues related
to conflict, migration, and development. For further

Adyan foundation, the Lebanese American University
in Lebanon (Byblos), and Konrad Adenauer Foundation
(Amman office) are organizing this conference.
The conference will join 40-50 academicians and researchers
in politics and religion as well as policy
makers and experts from political, diplomatic and social
spheres, to:
- promote in depth critical reflection amongst Arab
and European experts and policy makers on the role
and place of religion in the public sphere, and the relation
