The workshop will discuss the following themes:
1. When and how did roads become important part
of processes of control and consolidation of power, either
by state or regional powerful elites?
2. What discourses (‘opening up the interiors’,
‘moral and material advancement’, ‘civilizing mission’,
‘progress and modernity’, for instance) were
used to justify such a control and how did they manifest
themselves?
3. What was the nature of finance and expenditure?
What kinds of labour (forced, free, contracted, and so
on) was used to make roads? What was the nature
(temporary, seasonal, migrational, level of skill, etc.)
of this labour market? What were the disciplining
mechanisms applied on the group of workers?
4. How did roads relate to other forms of communication
(river navigation and railways)? Is the nature of
this interaction conflictual or complementary?

This is a conference dedicated to study the life histories
of religious activists from the perspective of the
psychology of religion. It will focus attention on Islamic
activists involved in some or the other form of
religious activism since the 1970s. Papers will examine
personal trajectories over a long period of time,
focusing on initial participation through to their present
positions.

Study of Religion (NGG): “Religion and Social
Cohesion: Challenges and Perspectives”, University

We want to raise the question whether religion(s) and
discourses on religion(s) promote social cohesion or
social conflict in multicultural and plural modern societies.
The conference will combine sociological, anthropological,
and historical approaches to the theme
of social cohesion and will provide a contribution to
the ongoing debates in Europe regarding the benefits
and problems of religious convictions.
We invite proposals for papers, panels, and posters
from all disciplinary perspectives on religion and social
cohesion. Proposals may also address other aspects
of Durkheim’s legacy in the study of religion.
Deadline for submitting an abstract for an individual
paper is 1 July 2012. Abstracts should be emailed to
