ing out the project and, indeed, the design of the Study itself, The Secretariat is
indebted to them for a considerable number of proposals and much information
of which account was taken in the writing of the various chapters. Lastly, this
over-all review is based upon the invaluable contributions made by many specialists
who were called in to write a series of relatively brief studies, elucidating,
or dealing in greater detail with, certain particular aspects of scientific work -
recent or still unpublished research, questions on the border line of several disciplines,
etc. - on which it would otherwise have been difficult to assemble information
and analyses. Most of these contributions have already been published
separately, and the majority have also been included in a corporate publication6
or in the International Social Science Journal.7 A list of the authors of these contributions,
and of the specialists consulted on various points who made particulary
significant contributions to the Study, is appended.*
The preparation of the different chapters was supervised by a panel of consultants,
set up in March 1965 after the necessary contacts had been made and after
the UNESCO National Commissions concerned had been consulted. The members
of the panel were responsible for giving specialist advice in their respective fields
to the Secretariat and to the writers of the contributions required for the project.
At the same time, most of them were either directly responsible or shared responsibility
for the preparation of thevarious chapters, and formed, together, an
editorial board for the first part of the Study as a whole. The following agreed
to serve on the panel :
P. Auger, professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Paris, the
author of the study already carried out under UNESCO’s auspices on the main
trends of inquiry in the natural sciences;
P. de Bie, professor at the University of Louvain;
R. Boudon, professor at the Sorbonne;
P. N. Fedoseev, Vice-president of the U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences, assisted by
V. S. Semenov, of theInstituteof Philosophyof theU.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences;
R. Jakobson, professor at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology;
0. Lange, member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, assisted by W. Brus, T.
Kowalik and I. Sachs who, after Professor Lange’s death in 1965, took over responsibility
for a preliminary version of the economics chapter, which was completed
and put into final form by the Secretariat.

C. LCvi-Strauss, professor at the Collkge de France who, owing to the pressure
of private work, had to surrender his place on the panel to P. Mercier, Director
