stand the methods by which they can be approached. There is a way to meet
this danger. Let us accept the new trend as it is represented by authors who not
only argue for it, but who also have performed the hard labour of providing
concrete studies. Understandably, they were not inclined to discuss their procedures
at the time they created the new style. But the observer from the outside
should see it as a task to ‘explicate’ what is going on. In this way he’ can reconcile
the creative urge of a movement with the tradition of a social science that
wishes to overreach all actual trends by general systematics.
This argument is still open to one objection: why should this integration be
provided by a methodological rather than a ‘theoretical‘ approach? How do
macrosociologists select their problems ? What role do existing sociological
systems play in their interpretation? What do their studies contribute to the
storehouse of general sociology? Such questions lead to the recent work of
sociological theorists. This is the topic to which our next section is devoted.
