30. Regional differences should always be kept in mind. Thus, for instance, Poland
had a great pre-war tradition of sociological research, which helps to explain why
concrete sociology there expanded so rapidly after 1956. Yugoslavia had developed
a more de-centralized form of national ownership which facilitated an earlier
acceptance of empirical studies.
31. I do not include problems of stratification. The extensive discussion on the notion
of class has had no effect on empirical work. Good Eastern and Western studies
are quite similar.

37. It is, of course, regrettable that crucial Soviet studies could not be examined in
the original. However, in certain cases it was possible to get a reasonably good
picture of a major study because it was commented upon by a number of authors.
Take as an example the study of Leningrad youth by Zdravomyslov and
Yadov: it is referred to at least three times by the contributors to the report by
the Soviet delegation to the Sixth World Congress of Sociology. G. OSSIPOV and
V. KELLE mention it in an auxiliary contribution prepared in connection with the
present study (‘MatBrialisme historique, thBorie sociologique et recherche sociale
en URSS’, in: The Social Sciences: Problems and Orientations, The Hague-Paris,
Mouton-Unesco, 1968, pp. 209-223). George Fischer, the Columbia University
expert on Soviet sociology, describes it in detail, including actual tables.
