who show mercy, You are certainly <strong>the</strong> most Merciful <strong>of</strong> those who<br />

show mercy. To whom shall you hand me over? To an enemy who will<br />

treat me harshly or to a near one to whom You shall give control over<br />

me? If You are not angry with me, I care for nothing except that Your<br />

protection should be vast enough for me4 In Your Countenance by<br />

which multitudes <strong>of</strong> darkness are turned to light and by which <strong>the</strong><br />

affairs <strong>of</strong> this world and <strong>the</strong> Aakhirah are:remedied, I seek protection<br />

from being afflicted by Your wrath and displeasure. <strong>The</strong> causes <strong>of</strong> Your<br />

displeasure should be removed until You are pleased. <strong>The</strong>re is no might<br />

but with Allaah." ('1<br />

A more detailed narration from Zuhri 3GGiilGij shall be quoted in <strong>the</strong> chapter<br />

concerning <strong>the</strong> difficulties that were borne for <strong>the</strong> sake <strong>of</strong> Da'wah.<br />

Inviting Towards Islaam on <strong>the</strong> Battlefield<br />

Rasulullaah @@ Never Fought anyone Until he<br />

had Invited him to Allaah<br />

Hadhrat Abdullaah bi.n Abbaas narrates that Rasulullaah would<br />

never fight any nation until he had already conveyed <strong>the</strong> Da'wh <strong>of</strong> Islaam to<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. (2)<br />

Rasulullaah Instructs <strong>the</strong> Muslim Battalions to First Gain People's<br />

Confidence and <strong>the</strong>n to Invite <strong>the</strong>m to Islaam<br />

Hadhrat Abdur Rahmaan bin ~a'idh ?ZIGM narrates that whenever Rasulullaah<br />

k%@ dispatched a battalion, he would brief <strong>the</strong>m thus, "Gain <strong>the</strong> confidence <strong>of</strong><br />

people and do not attack <strong>the</strong>m until you have called <strong>the</strong>m to Islaam. If you bring<br />

to me <strong>the</strong> residents <strong>of</strong> every baked and unbaked home (<strong>of</strong> every citTand village)<br />

on earth as Muslims, it would please me more than you killing <strong>the</strong>ir men and<br />

bringing <strong>the</strong>ir women and children to me as captives." (3)<br />

Rasulullaah @@ Instructs <strong>the</strong> Commanders <strong>of</strong><br />

Muslims Troops to Convey <strong>the</strong> Message <strong>of</strong> Islaam<br />

Hadhrat Buraydah B,C= narrates that whenever Rasulullaah @%% appointed<br />

someone as commander <strong>of</strong> Muslims troops, he would instruct him to fear Allaah<br />

with regard to his personal actions and advise him to be good towards those<br />

under his command. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, Rasulullaah @% would brief <strong>the</strong>m with <strong>the</strong><br />

following words: "When you face your Mushrik enemies, invite <strong>the</strong>m to accept<br />

one <strong>of</strong> three options. Should <strong>the</strong>y accept any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se, you may not engage <strong>the</strong>m<br />

in battle. First invite <strong>the</strong>m to accept Islaam. If <strong>the</strong>y accept, you should accept<br />

this from <strong>the</strong>m and refrain from fighting <strong>the</strong>m. You should <strong>the</strong>n call <strong>the</strong>m to<br />
