<strong>The</strong> Incident <strong>of</strong> Seven Men <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ansaar Martyred<br />

During, <strong>the</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong> Uhud<br />

Hadhrat Anas ?ZIG6= reports that when <strong>the</strong> Mushrikeen surrounded Rasulullaah<br />

@@ during <strong>the</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong> Uhud, Rasulullaah @%% was with seven men from <strong>the</strong><br />

Ansaar and one from <strong>the</strong> Quraysh. ~asulullaah said, "Who will repulse <strong>the</strong>m<br />

from us and be my companion in ~annah?" An Ansaari stepped forward and<br />

fought until he was martyred. When <strong>the</strong> Mushrikeen again surrounded<br />

Rasulullaah w, he again announced, "Who will repulse <strong>the</strong>m from us and be<br />

my companion in Jannah?" (Ano<strong>the</strong>r Ansaari went forward and fought until he<br />

was also martyred. Rasulullaah w and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs were repeatedly surrounded<br />

and repulsed by each one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> seven Ansaar until) Eventually all seven had been<br />

martyred. Rasulullaah m <strong>the</strong>n said, "We have not been fair to our companions<br />

(by leaving <strong>the</strong>m to fight'single-handedly)." (2)<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r narration from Hadhrat Jaabir iiWWZ states that after being<br />

overwhelmed during <strong>the</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong> Uhud, <strong>the</strong> Muslims dispersed from around<br />

Rasulullaah and <strong>the</strong> only people with him were eleven men from <strong>the</strong> Ansaar<br />

and Hadhrat Talha bin Ubaydillaah ?2lGi@$. Rasulullaah had begun climbing<br />

<strong>the</strong> mountain when <strong>the</strong> Mushrikeen caught up with him. Rasulullaah @%& <strong>the</strong>n<br />

asked, "Is <strong>the</strong>re none to repulse <strong>the</strong>m?" "I am here, 0 Rasulullaah @%&!"<br />

responded Hadhrat Talha ~G$&i4. "Stay where you are, 0 Talha," Rasulullaah<br />

@@ instructed. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ansaar <strong>the</strong>n said, "I shall, 0 Rasulullaah m!"<br />

As <strong>the</strong><br />

Ansaari fought in <strong>the</strong>ir defence, Rasulullaah @% and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs with him<br />

continued climbing. <strong>The</strong> Ansaari was eventually martyred and <strong>the</strong> Mushrikeen<br />

were again catching up with Rasulullaah w.<br />

Rasulullaah w again asked, "Is <strong>the</strong>re none to repulse <strong>the</strong>m?" When Hadhrat<br />

Talha ?&lGw again volunteered for <strong>the</strong> task, Rasulullaah @@$ gave him <strong>the</strong> same<br />

instruction as before. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ansaar said, "<strong>The</strong>n 1 shall, 0 Rasulullaah m!"<br />

As <strong>the</strong> Ansaari fought in <strong>the</strong>ir defence, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs continued climbing. This<br />

Ansaari was also martyred and <strong>the</strong> Mushrikeen again started catching up with<br />

Rasulullaah 'tk%%. Rasulullaah @% <strong>the</strong>n repeated his request as before (every<br />

time an Ansaari was martyred defending <strong>the</strong>m) to which Hadhrat Talha BWj<br />

repeatedly volunteered himself. Rasulullaah @% however, kept holding him<br />

back, to which an Ansaari volunteered himself and received permission to fight.<br />

Each one <strong>the</strong>n fought as <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs had fought until none but Hadhrat Talha<br />

SGWj was left with Rasulullaah @%.<br />

However, <strong>the</strong> Mushrikeen again surrounded Rasulullaah m. When Rasulullaah<br />

@%$ announced, "Is <strong>the</strong>re none to repulse <strong>the</strong>m?" Hadhrat Talha ?2lWj replied,<br />

(I) Haakim, narrating from Ibn Is'haaq. Dhahabi has commented on <strong>the</strong> chain <strong>of</strong> narrators. <strong>The</strong><br />

complete narration <strong>of</strong> Ibn Is'haaq is reported in Al Bidaaya wan Nihaaya (Vo1.4 Pg.39). Imaam<br />

Maalik has also reported <strong>the</strong> narration in his Mu'atta (Pg. 175) as has Ibn Sa'd (Vo1.3 Pg.523).<br />
