what should I pledge my allegiance?" Rasulullaah stretched out his hand<br />

and said, "Testify that <strong>the</strong>re is none worthy <strong>of</strong> worship but Allaah and that<br />

Muhammad is Allaah's servant and Rasul. Perform your five salaahs on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

times, pay <strong>the</strong> obligatory zakaah, fast during <strong>the</strong> month <strong>of</strong> Ramadhaan, perform<br />

Hajj and fighting in <strong>the</strong> path <strong>of</strong> Allaah."<br />

~adhrat Basheer ?3S&% said, "0 Rasulullaah 'w! I can carry out all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

besides two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. (<strong>The</strong> first is) Zakaah, for I possess only ten camels. <strong>The</strong> milk<br />

<strong>of</strong> which my family needs to subsist on and who are <strong>the</strong> only beasts <strong>of</strong> burden<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have. (<strong>The</strong> second is) Fighting in Jihaad because I am a timid person. Since<br />

people say that <strong>the</strong> one who flees from <strong>the</strong> battlefield returns with <strong>the</strong> wrath <strong>of</strong><br />

Allaah, I fear that when a battle is fought and I flee for fear <strong>of</strong> my life, I shall also<br />

refurn with <strong>the</strong> wrath <strong>of</strong> Allaah."<br />

Rasulullaah &@% <strong>the</strong>n retracted his hand and shaking his hand said, "0 Basheer!<br />

By virtue <strong>of</strong> what deed will you enter Jannah without zakaah and Jihaad?"<br />

Hadhrat Basheer <strong>the</strong>n said, "0 Rasulullaah m! Extend your hand." When<br />

Rasulullaah &%% did so, Hadhrat Basheer %2!S4L% pledged his allegiance to all<br />

<strong>the</strong> actions. ('1<br />

Hadhrat Jareer bin Abdillaah !BG- pledges his<br />

allegiance to <strong>the</strong> Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> Islaam and<br />

wishing well for Every Muslim<br />

Hadhrat Jareer ?$W&!% narrates that he pledged allegiance at <strong>the</strong> hand <strong>of</strong><br />

Rasulullaah &%% that he would establish salaah, pay zakaah and wish well for<br />

every Muslim. (2)<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r narration states from Hadhrat Jareer Wi@!G states that he said, "0<br />

Rasulullaah @@! Do state <strong>the</strong> conditions (<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pledge) for you are best aware<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> conditions." Rasulullaah @@@ said, "I require you to pledge that you would<br />

worship none but <strong>the</strong> One Allaah without ascribing any partners to Him, that you<br />

would establish salaah, pay zakaah, wish every Muslim well and absolve<br />

yourself from Shirk." (3)<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r narration states tbat when Hadhrat Jareer @&&.i came to Rasulullaah<br />

@&%,/~asulullaah'@@ asked him to stretch out his hand (to pledge his<br />

?llegi;nce). Hadhrat Jareer @!3W asked, "On what should I pledge my<br />

allegiance?" Rasulullaah @% replied, "That you would surrender yourself to<br />

Allaah and wish well for every Muslim." Hadhrat Jareer S,W accepted <strong>the</strong><br />

conditions. Since he was an intelligent man, he said, "0 Rasulullaah @&%! (1 shall<br />

Allaah" and Islaam" and under <strong>the</strong> subheading "Hadhrat Ziyaad bin Haarith Sudaa'ee Sends a<br />

Letter to his People".<br />

(1) Hasan bin Sufyaan, Tabraani in his Awsat, Abu Nu'aym, Haakim, Bayhaqi and Ibn Asaakir as<br />

mentioned in Kanzul Urnrnaal(Vo1.7 Pg.12). Ahmad has also narrated it from au<strong>the</strong>ntic sources as<br />

confirmed by Haythami (Vol. 1 Pg.42).<br />

(2) Ahmad and Ibn Jareer as quoted in Kanlul Urnrnaal (Vol.1 Pg.82). Bukhari, Muslim and Tirmidhi<br />

have also reported it, as mentioned in Targheeb wat Tarheeb (Vol.3 Pg.236).<br />

(3) Ahmad and Nasa'ee as reported in A/ Bidaaya wan Nihaaya (Vo1.5 Pg.78). A narration <strong>of</strong> Ibn Jareer<br />

as mentioned in mmul Urnrnaal (Vol. 1 Pg.82) is <strong>the</strong> same except that <strong>the</strong> words state, "...that you<br />

wish every Muslim well and separate yourself from Shirk."
