Zaid !3Ui% informed him about what had transpired. Hadhrat Aa'isha BGWj<br />

says that she had never heard a more detailed and accurate account <strong>of</strong> any<br />

incident given by someone who had been present <strong>the</strong>re. When <strong>the</strong> defeated<br />

Muslim army returned and Hadhrat Umar 3Gwj noticed <strong>the</strong> anxiety <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Muhaajireen and <strong>the</strong> Ansaar because <strong>the</strong>y had fled <strong>the</strong> battlefield, he said, "Do<br />

not worry, 0 assembly <strong>of</strong> Muslims! I am your base to which you have withdrawn<br />

(to replenish your strength before returning to battle)."<br />

<strong>The</strong> Anxiety <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Mu'aadh Qaari %%&<br />

when he Fled During <strong>the</strong> Battle for <strong>the</strong> Bridge and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Statement <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Umar ~,Ew2<br />

Hadhrat Muhammad bin Abdur Rahmaan bin Husayn and o<strong>the</strong>rs report that<br />

Hadhrat Mu'aadh Qaari !W&j from <strong>the</strong> Banu Najjaar tribe was amongst those<br />

who were present and had fled during <strong>the</strong> battle for <strong>the</strong> Bridge <strong>of</strong> Abu Ubayd. He<br />

always wept whenever he recited <strong>the</strong> following verse <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Qur'aan:<br />

On such a day (<strong>of</strong> battle), whoever will turn his back to <strong>the</strong>m with a<br />

reason o<strong>the</strong>r than altering <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> battle (such aspretending to<br />

flee so that <strong>the</strong> enemy follows <strong>the</strong>m into an ambush) or (flees with a<br />

reason o<strong>the</strong>r than) retreating to (join with) ano<strong>the</strong>r group (<strong>of</strong> MusJim<br />

soldiers so that <strong>the</strong>ir combined force can fight <strong>the</strong> enemy), <strong>the</strong>n indeed<br />

he shall return with Allaah's anger and his abode shall be Jahannam<br />

(because deserting <strong>the</strong> battlefield is a major sin). What an evil place to<br />

return to! {Surah Anfaal, verse 16)<br />

Hadhrat Umar ~Gwj would <strong>the</strong>n say to him, "Do not weep, 0 Mu'aadh. I am<br />

your base to whom you have retreated (to regroup and have reinforcements<br />

before launching ano<strong>the</strong>r attack)." ( I)<br />

Hadhrat Sa'd bin Ubayd Qaari %%&2j Returns to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Land <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Battle from which he fled to<br />

Redeem himself<br />

Hadhrat Abdur Rahmaan bin Abu Layla 9GW says that Hadhrat Sa'd bin Ubayd<br />

%5lW was a companion <strong>of</strong> Rasulullaah who was with <strong>the</strong> army that was<br />

defeated on <strong>the</strong> day that Hadhrat Abu Ubayd !3Bwj was martyred (at <strong>the</strong> bridge).<br />

He received <strong>the</strong> title <strong>of</strong> Qaari, a title that no o<strong>the</strong>r companion <strong>of</strong> Rasulullaah<br />

&%@ received. Hadhrat Umar BGW once said to him, "Do you wish to go to<br />

Shaam where <strong>the</strong> Muslims are in a weak position and <strong>the</strong> enemy are becoming<br />

bold against <strong>the</strong>m. Perhaps you will be able to cleanse <strong>the</strong> mistake <strong>of</strong> your<br />

fleeing." Hadhrat Sa'd 3Gwj replied, "No. I shall go only to <strong>the</strong> lan'd from which<br />
