o<strong>the</strong>rs, he started weeping. When <strong>the</strong> people asked him what it was that made<br />

him weep, he said, "I swear by Allaah that it is nei<strong>the</strong>r love for this world nor my<br />

attachment to you that makes me weep. However, I have heard Rasulullaah<br />

recite a verse for <strong>the</strong> Qur'aan that speaks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fire <strong>of</strong> Jahannam:<br />

Every one <strong>of</strong> you shall pass by it (everyone shallpass over/ahannam as<br />

<strong>the</strong>y cross <strong>the</strong> bridge <strong>of</strong> Siraat that spans lahannam). This is a decreed<br />

command <strong>of</strong> your Rabb. {Surah Maryam, verse 7 1 )<br />

I have no idea how am I to return after this crossing." <strong>The</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Muslims said to<br />

him, "May Allaah be your companion. May He remove your worries and return<br />

you to us hail and healthy." Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Rawaaha ~ G W<strong>the</strong>n j recited<br />

<strong>the</strong> following couplets which meant:<br />

"I implore Ar Rahmaan for forgiveness<br />

And <strong>the</strong> strike <strong>of</strong> a wide sword that causes foaming blood to spurt forth<br />

Or (/ implore Allaah for) <strong>the</strong> htal strike <strong>of</strong> a blood-thirsty enemy5 spear<br />

T17at pierces through my intestines and liver<br />

And when people pass by my grave, it will be said,<br />

-<br />

May Allaah care for this warrior' who has already been cared for"<br />

As <strong>the</strong> army were preparing to leave, Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Rawaaha 3GW;<br />

went to greet Rasulullaah @$. He <strong>the</strong>n recited <strong>the</strong> following couplets which<br />

meant:<br />

"May Allaah preserve all <strong>the</strong> good He has granted you<br />

As He did for Moosa w, and may He assist you as o<strong>the</strong>rs were assisted<br />

1 see you ever increasing in good<br />

And Allaall knows that my sight is excellent<br />

You are <strong>the</strong> Rasul and whoever is deprived <strong>of</strong>your munificence<br />

and your attention truly is ill-fated"<br />

<strong>The</strong> army <strong>the</strong>n left. Rasulullaah left to bid farewell to <strong>the</strong>m and when he<br />

turned back (to return to Madinah), Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Rawaaha 3Gw<br />

said:<br />

"May peace remain with <strong>the</strong> great man whom I have greeted amongst <strong>the</strong> date<br />

palms, yho is <strong>the</strong> best <strong>of</strong> those who bid farewell and <strong>the</strong> best <strong>of</strong> friends"<br />

Martyrdom<br />

<strong>The</strong> expedition marched until <strong>the</strong>y set up camp at a place called Ma'aan which<br />

was located in Shaam. <strong>The</strong>re <strong>the</strong>y received intelligence that Heraclius had arrived<br />

in Ma'aab in <strong>the</strong> district <strong>of</strong> Balqaa with a hundred thousand Roman soldiers. In<br />

addition to this, he had been reinforced by ano<strong>the</strong>r hundred thousand soldiers<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Lakhm, Judhaam, Qayn, Bahraa and Baly tribes. Commanding <strong>the</strong><br />

reinforcements was a man named Maalik bin Zaafila who belonged to <strong>the</strong> Iraasha
