<strong>The</strong> Story <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Amr bin Jamooh a,gw and<br />

his Martyrdom During <strong>the</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong> Uhud<br />

Several elders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Banu Salma tribe have reported that Hadhrat Amr bin<br />

Jamooh was badly crippled while his four sons were like lions and<br />

participated in every battle by <strong>the</strong> side ~asulullaahf@%. When <strong>the</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong> Uhud<br />

took place, his sons tried to prevent him from participating saying, "Allaah has<br />

excused you." He <strong>the</strong>n approached Rasulullaah @% saying, "My sons want to<br />

stop me from leaving with you to participate in this battle. By Allaah! I wish to<br />

walk in Jannah with my paralysis." Rasulullaah @8% said to him, "Allaah has<br />

excused you. Jihaad is not compulsory for you." Rasulullaah k?@% <strong>the</strong>n said to his<br />

sons, "You need not prevent him (from participating) because Allaah may perhaps<br />

grant him <strong>the</strong> high rank <strong>of</strong> martyrdom." Hadhrat Amr bin Jamooh BGw <strong>the</strong>n<br />

left with Rasulullaah @@ and was martyred during <strong>the</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong> Uhud. (')<br />

Hadhrat Abu Qataadah %Iw who participated in <strong>the</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong> Uhud says that<br />

Hadhrat Amr bin Jamooh 4%U4Wwho was crippled once approached Rasulullaah<br />

@%# and said, "0 Rasulullaah @%#! If I fight in <strong>the</strong> path <strong>of</strong> Allaah and am killed,<br />

will I walk with a healthy leg in Jannah?" "Certainly,' replied Rasulullaah m.<br />

Subsequently, <strong>the</strong> Kuffaar martyred Hadhrat Amr bin Jamooh !&Ew, his nephew<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ir slave during <strong>the</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong> Uhud. When Rasulullaah kf6% passed by (<strong>the</strong><br />

corpse <strong>of</strong>) Hadhrat Amr bin Jamooh %3w, he said, "I can see him walking in<br />

Jannah with a healthy leg." Rasulullaah <strong>the</strong>n instructed that Hadhrat Amr<br />

bin Jamooh ?-3Iw, his nephew and slave should be buried in one grave. (2)<br />

<strong>The</strong> Story <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Raafi bin Khadeej ~,%@!&<br />

Hadhrat Yahya bin Abdul Hameedh narrates from his grandfa<strong>the</strong>r that an arrow<br />

struck Hadhrat Raafi bin Khadeej S,w during ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong> Uhud or <strong>the</strong><br />

Battle <strong>of</strong> ~ una~n(~). He <strong>the</strong>n went to Rasulullaah @@ and asked him to remove<br />

<strong>the</strong> arrow. Rasulullaah @%# said, "0 Raafi! If you want, I could remove <strong>the</strong> shaft<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r with arrowhead. O<strong>the</strong>rwise, I could remove only <strong>the</strong> shaft without<br />

arrowhead and testify on <strong>the</strong> Day <strong>of</strong> Qiyaamah that you are a martyr." Hadhrat<br />

Raafi said, "0 Rasulullaah @?@! Remove <strong>the</strong> shaft without <strong>the</strong> arrowhead<br />

and testify for me on <strong>the</strong> Day <strong>of</strong> Qiyaamah that I am a martyr." Rasulullaah @%<br />

did this. Hadhrat Raafi %,Wj lived until <strong>the</strong> period when Hadhrat Mu'aawiya<br />

3.%&6 was Khalifah, when <strong>the</strong> wound reopened and he passed away after Asr.<br />

Such is <strong>the</strong> report accsrding to this narration. However, <strong>the</strong> correct version <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

story according to Al Bidaaya wan Nihaaya is that Hadhrat Raafi bin Khadeej<br />

@,Uw passed away after <strong>the</strong> Khilaafah <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Mu'aawiya %3,%&5. Isaaba<br />

(Vol. 1 Pg.496) states that a period elapsed between <strong>the</strong> time his wound reopened<br />

and <strong>the</strong> time that he passed away. (4) Several such Ahadeeth shall Insha Allaah be<br />

quoted in <strong>the</strong> chapter discussing patience..<br />

(2) Ahmad. ~ a~thami (Vo19. pg.315j has commented on <strong>the</strong>chain <strong>of</strong> narrators. Bayhaqi (Vo1.9 Pg.24)<br />

has also reported <strong>the</strong> narration.<br />

(3) One <strong>of</strong> narrators Amr bin Marzooq is unsure which battle it was.<br />

(4) Bayhaqi. <strong>The</strong> narration is also reported by Baawardi, Ibn Mandah and Tabraani as quoted in<br />

Isaaba (Vo1.4 Pg.474) as well as Ibn Shaaheen as quoted in Isaaba (Vol.1 Pg.496).
