It is not (correct) for. <strong>the</strong> Mu'mineen to proceed (in Jihaad) all toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

(simuftaneously when it is not Fardh for all to participate). {Surah<br />

Taubah, verse 122)<br />

<strong>The</strong>n was <strong>the</strong> practice that while a party <strong>of</strong> Muslims would march with<br />

Rasulullaah w, ano<strong>the</strong>r party would remain behind. Those that remained<br />

behind with Rasulullaah @@ would attain a deep understanding <strong>of</strong> Deen so that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y may warn <strong>the</strong>ir people (those who had been engaged in Jihaad) when <strong>the</strong>y<br />

return.to <strong>the</strong>m from <strong>the</strong> expeditions. In this manner, <strong>the</strong>y were aware <strong>of</strong> what<br />

Allaah revealed in <strong>the</strong> Qur'aan, about <strong>the</strong>ir obligations and about <strong>the</strong> limits that<br />

Allaah had set."<br />

<strong>The</strong> Letter <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Umar S,Gwj to his<br />

Commanders about Attaining a Deep<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> Deen<br />

Hadhrat Ahwas bin Hakeem bin Umayr AbSi narrates that Hadhrat Umar B,Gm<br />

wrote <strong>the</strong> following in a letter addressed to <strong>the</strong> commanders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> various<br />

Muslims armies, "Endeavour to attain a deep understanding <strong>of</strong> Deen because no<br />

person can be excused for pursuing falsehood thinking that it is <strong>the</strong> truth.<br />

Similarly, no one can be excused for forsaking <strong>the</strong> truth in <strong>the</strong> belief that it is<br />

fals.ehood." (2)<br />

Hadhrat Hitaan bin Abdullaah Raqaashi narrates that <strong>the</strong>y were once part <strong>of</strong> an<br />

army under <strong>the</strong> command <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Abu Moosa Ash'ari %,W2. <strong>The</strong>y were<br />

travelling along <strong>the</strong> banks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tigris River when <strong>the</strong> time for salaah arrived.<br />

After someone had called out <strong>the</strong> Adhaan for <strong>the</strong> Zuhr salaah, <strong>the</strong> people started<br />

making wudhu and Hadhrat Abu Moosa Ash'ari ~C= also made wudhu. He<br />

<strong>the</strong>n led <strong>the</strong>m in salaah, after which <strong>the</strong>y all sat in groups. When <strong>the</strong> time for <strong>the</strong><br />

Asr salaah arrived, someone called out <strong>the</strong> Adhaan for Asr and <strong>the</strong> people again<br />

stood up to make wudhu. Hadhrat Abu Moosa Ash'ari SiiW&% <strong>the</strong>n instructed <strong>the</strong><br />

Mu'adhin to announce, "Take note that none should make wudhu besides those<br />

whose wudhu had broken." Hadhrat Abu Moosa Ash'ari LS!XBj <strong>the</strong>n said, "It<br />

seems imminent that knowledge shall disappear and ignorance will prosper to<br />

<strong>the</strong> extent that because <strong>of</strong> ignorance, a man will use his sword to kill his own<br />

mo<strong>the</strong>r." (3)<br />
