you even if you were clinging on to <strong>the</strong> shroud <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kabah." Someone <strong>the</strong>n<br />

suggested, "Should you not discuss making peace with <strong>the</strong>m?" He replied, "Is this<br />

<strong>the</strong> time for making peace? I swear by Allaah that even if <strong>the</strong>y find you inside <strong>the</strong><br />

Kabah, <strong>the</strong>y would slaughter you all." He <strong>the</strong>n recited <strong>the</strong> following couplets<br />

(which meant):<br />

7 shall not sell my life for something that is Rawed<br />

nor shall r climb a ladder for fear <strong>of</strong> death<br />

1 aspire for an arrow that strikes and cannot be shined<br />

How can one who desires death have any o<strong>the</strong>r aspiration?"<br />

Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Zubayr WGW <strong>the</strong>n addressed <strong>the</strong> family <strong>of</strong> (his fa<strong>the</strong>r)<br />

Hadhrat Zubayr %B&j saying, "Each one <strong>of</strong> you should look after his sword as<br />

he looks after his face. He should ensure that it does not break o<strong>the</strong>rwise he will<br />

have to defend himself with his hands as if he were a woman. By Allaah! I have<br />

always been in <strong>the</strong> front line <strong>of</strong> every battle and I have never felt <strong>the</strong> pain <strong>of</strong> any<br />

wound unless I applied medicine to it."<br />

As <strong>the</strong>y were talking, some people suddenly entered through <strong>the</strong> door <strong>of</strong> Banu<br />

Jumh. Amongst <strong>the</strong>m was black man. "Who are <strong>the</strong>y?" asked Hadhrat Abdullaah<br />

bin Zubayr !3=. When he was informed that <strong>the</strong>y were people from Hims, he<br />

attacked <strong>the</strong>m carrying two swords. <strong>The</strong> first person he met was <strong>the</strong> black man,<br />

whom he attacked with his sword and severed his leg. <strong>The</strong> man shoyted in pain<br />

and said, "0 son <strong>of</strong> an adulteress!" Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Zubayr ?3Iw<br />

responded by saying, "Get lost, 0 son <strong>of</strong> ~aam(')! Was Asmaa ever an<br />

adulteress?!" Hadhrat Aodullaah bin Zubayr %Wj <strong>the</strong>n removed <strong>the</strong>m all<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Masjid and retur ed.<br />

Just <strong>the</strong>n ano<strong>the</strong>r group o ! people barged through <strong>the</strong> Banu Salam door. When<br />

Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Zubayr WWj asked who <strong>the</strong>y were, he was informed<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y were people from Jordan. He <strong>the</strong>n attacked <strong>the</strong>m as he recited <strong>the</strong><br />

following couplets (which meant):<br />

"r do not trust an attack that comes in Roods<br />

<strong>The</strong> dust <strong>of</strong> which does not settle until <strong>the</strong> night"<br />

After he had removed <strong>the</strong>m also from <strong>the</strong> Masjid, ano<strong>the</strong>r group <strong>of</strong> people rushed<br />

in through <strong>the</strong> Banu Makhzoom door. This time, Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Zubayr<br />

BWj attacked <strong>the</strong>m reciting <strong>the</strong> following couplet (which meant):<br />

"Had my opponent been a single person, I would have been more than able to<br />

settle with him"<br />

<strong>The</strong>re were many supporters <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Zubayr %%Wj on <strong>the</strong> ro<strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Masjid who were throwing bricks on <strong>the</strong> invaders. However, as Hadhrat<br />

Abdullaah bin Zubayr %w attacked <strong>the</strong> enemy, a brick struck <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> his<br />

head, causing a terrible gash. He paused for a while as he said:<br />

"Our wounds do not bleed on to our heels<br />

On <strong>the</strong> contrag our blood drops on to our feet (ra<strong>the</strong>r than having wounds on<br />

<strong>the</strong> back <strong>of</strong> oul bodies as cowards have, our wounds are on <strong>the</strong> front parts <strong>of</strong> our<br />
