<strong>The</strong> Bravery <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Hamza bin Abdil<br />

His Bravery During <strong>the</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong> Badr and <strong>the</strong><br />

Statement <strong>of</strong> Umayyah bin Khalaf in this Regard<br />

Hadhrat Haarith Taymi narrates that during <strong>the</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong> Badr, Hadhrat Hamza<br />

bin Abdil Muttalib distinguished himself by wearing ostrich fea<strong>the</strong>rs. One<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mushrikeen asked, "Who is <strong>the</strong> man who marks himself with ostrich<br />

fea<strong>the</strong>rs?" "He is Hamza bin Abdil Muttalib," came <strong>the</strong> reply. <strong>The</strong> man <strong>the</strong>n<br />

commented, "It was he who carried out all those major <strong>of</strong>fensives against us."<br />

Hadhrat Abdur Rahmaan bin Auf %GW says that Umayyah bin Khalaf once<br />

asked him, "0 Abdul Ilaa! Who was <strong>the</strong> man who marked his chest with ostrich<br />

fea<strong>the</strong>rs during <strong>the</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong> Badr?" "He was <strong>the</strong> uncle <strong>of</strong> Rasulullaah w. He<br />

was Hamza bin Abdil Muttalib," replied Hadhrat Abdur Rahmaan bin Auf ~,G=.<br />

Hadhrat Jaabir bin Abdullaah 8,Gw narrates that as <strong>the</strong>y were returning from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Battlefield <strong>of</strong> Uhud, Rasulullaah could not find Hadhrat Hamza 9,BWj.<br />

Someone said, "I saw him by that tree as he was saying, 'I am <strong>the</strong> lion <strong>of</strong> Allaah<br />

and <strong>the</strong> lion <strong>of</strong> His Rasool @@. 0 Allaah! I absolve myself from what those<br />

people (Abu Sufyaan and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs) have done and I seek pardon from what<br />

<strong>the</strong>se people (<strong>the</strong> Muslims) have done (by causing <strong>the</strong>ir own defeat)." Rasulullaah<br />

went in that direction and started crying when he caught sight <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat<br />

Hamza t's forehead. However, when Rasulullaah @@ saw how <strong>the</strong> body <strong>of</strong><br />

Hadhrat Hamza 9Bw was mutilated, he wept uncontrollably. Rasulullaah @@<br />

<strong>the</strong>n asked, "Is <strong>the</strong>re no Kafan (burial shroud)?" One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ansaar stood up and<br />

threw a cloth over <strong>the</strong> body. <strong>The</strong>reafter, Rasulullaah said, "In <strong>the</strong> sight <strong>of</strong><br />

Allaah, Hamza shall be <strong>the</strong> leader <strong>of</strong> all martyrs on <strong>the</strong> Day <strong>of</strong> Qiyaamah." (3)<br />

Hadhrat Ja'far bin Amr bin Umayyah Dhamri says that it was during <strong>the</strong> Khilaafah<br />

<strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Mu'aawiya %BW when he and Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Adi bin<br />

Khiyaar went out. He <strong>the</strong>n goes on to report a lengthy narration in which he<br />

states that when <strong>the</strong> two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m sat before Hadhrat Wahshi %GW, <strong>the</strong>y asked,<br />

"We have come here so that you may relate to us how you managed to martyr<br />

Hadhrat Hamza %Bwj." He responded by saying, "I shall relate <strong>the</strong> incident to<br />

you as I had related it to ~asulullaah when he asked me about it. I had been<br />
