him. After narrating this incident, Hadhrat Umar %X%!23 says that he later carried<br />

out numerous good deeds to make amends for this behaviour.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> treaty had been written, Rasulullaah &%% instructed <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sahabah</strong><br />

to slaughter <strong>the</strong>ir animals and to shave <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong>ir hair (an indication that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were to return without pgforming Umrah). <strong>The</strong> narrator <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hadith says,<br />

"By Allaah! No one stood up to do this even though Rasulullaah thrice<br />

repeated <strong>the</strong> instruction (because <strong>the</strong>y all hpped that he would perhaps<br />

reconsider <strong>the</strong> situation)." When he saw that no one was prepared to cany out<br />

<strong>the</strong> command, he went to (his tent where he met) his wife Hadhrat Umm<br />

Salma GEW%. When he informed her <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> difficulty he was having, she said,<br />

"0 Nabi <strong>of</strong> Allaah! Why do you ra<strong>the</strong>r not do this? Go out <strong>the</strong>re without<br />

speaking a word to anyone, slaughter your animal, call for someone to shave<br />

your hatr and have it shaved <strong>of</strong>f." Rasulullaah @@ <strong>the</strong>n went out and did<br />

accordingly. He slaughtered his animal, called for someone to shave <strong>of</strong>f his hair<br />

and had it shaved <strong>of</strong>f. When <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sahabah</strong> i4.?%&% saw this, <strong>the</strong>y all stood up,<br />

slaughtered <strong>the</strong>ir animals and started shaving each o<strong>the</strong>rs' hair. In fact, <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

so sad that it appeared that <strong>the</strong>y could almost kill each o<strong>the</strong>r out <strong>of</strong> grief.<br />

<strong>The</strong>reafter, some Muslim women arrived <strong>the</strong>re (to join <strong>the</strong> Muslims) and <strong>the</strong><br />

following verse <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Qur'aan was revealed:<br />

0 you who have Imaan! When Mu'mineen women come to you (in a<br />

Muslim count@ as immigrants, ' <strong>the</strong>n (instead <strong>of</strong> sending <strong>the</strong>m back)<br />

examine <strong>the</strong>m (test whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y are sincere Muslims). (Of course, you<br />

can on/y judge <strong>the</strong> sincerity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir Zmaan superficial& because only)<br />

Allaah best knows <strong>the</strong> (true) condition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir Imaan. If (after<br />

examining <strong>the</strong>m,) youdetermine that <strong>the</strong>y really are Mu'mineen women<br />

(and not impostors), <strong>the</strong>n do not return <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong> Kuffaar. Nei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

are <strong>the</strong>se women lawful (as wives) for <strong>the</strong> Kuffaar men nor are <strong>the</strong><br />

Kuffaar men lawful (as husbands) for <strong>the</strong>se women. Return to <strong>the</strong>m (to<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir Kuffaar.husbands) what <strong>the</strong>y have spent (as dowry because <strong>the</strong><br />

marriage has terminated). (<strong>The</strong>reaAer,) <strong>The</strong>re is no harm if you (Muslim<br />

men) marry <strong>the</strong>se women when you give <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong>ir dowry. (0 Muslim<br />
