move from <strong>the</strong>ir places to <strong>the</strong> home <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Muhaajireen. Inform <strong>the</strong>m that if <strong>the</strong>y<br />

do this, <strong>the</strong>y shall enjoy <strong>the</strong> privileges <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Muhaajireen and will have to fulfil<br />

<strong>the</strong> same responsibilities that <strong>the</strong> Muhaajireen do. However, if <strong>the</strong>y refuse to<br />

move and prefer <strong>the</strong>ir homes, inform <strong>the</strong>m that <strong>the</strong>y will fall in <strong>the</strong> category <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Muslim villagers. Allaah's cdmrnands that apply to all Muslims shall apply to<br />

<strong>the</strong>m but <strong>the</strong>y will have no shbre in <strong>the</strong> spoils <strong>of</strong> war unless <strong>the</strong>y fight toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r Muslims. If <strong>the</strong>y refuse this option, ask <strong>the</strong>m to pay <strong>the</strong> Jizya.<br />

Should <strong>the</strong>y accept this, accept it from <strong>the</strong>m and refrain from fighting <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

However, if <strong>the</strong>y refuse even this, seek Allaah's assistance and fight <strong>the</strong>m. If<br />

you lay siege to a fort and <strong>the</strong> enemy asks you to allow <strong>the</strong>m to leave on Allaah's<br />

terms, do not allow it because you have no idea what Allaah's terms are. You<br />

should ra<strong>the</strong>r allow <strong>the</strong>m to leave on your terms. You may <strong>the</strong>n decide what<br />

<strong>the</strong> terms should be." ('1<br />

Rasulullaah @8 Commands Hadhrat Ali<br />

Not to fight until he had Invited <strong>the</strong> Enemy to<br />

Islaam<br />

Hadhrat Anas bin Maalik %WW narrates that Rasulullaah once dispatched<br />

Hadhrat Ali bin Abi Taalib BBWj as commander <strong>of</strong> a battalion to fight a battle.<br />

<strong>The</strong>reafter, Rasulullaah '&@% sent a messenger with instructions to draw close to<br />

Hadhrat Ali 3!L5w with <strong>the</strong> message and not to call it out from a distance. <strong>The</strong><br />

message was that he should not engage in battle until he had invited <strong>the</strong> enemy<br />

to islaam. (2)<br />

Hadhrat Ibn Raahway .JF&lGj narrates from Hadhrat Ali @Bw that Rasulullaah<br />

@8% once sent him somewhere (as commander <strong>of</strong> a battalion). Rasulullaah<br />

<strong>the</strong>n instructed ano<strong>the</strong>r person thus, "Join up (with Hadhrat Ali 3,Ew) and<br />

without calling him from behind, tell him that Nabi commands you to wait<br />

for him and that you should not fight anyone until you have invited <strong>the</strong>m to<br />

accept Islaam. (3)<br />

Hadhrat Ali B,G= has also mentioned that when Rasulullaah @@ sent him, he<br />

said, "Never fight a nation until you have invited <strong>the</strong>m to accept Islaam." (4)<br />

<strong>The</strong> narration <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Sahl bin Sa'd ~,C= as reported by Bukhari and o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

has already passed in which Rasulullaah @% said to Hadhrat Ali B,w during<br />

<strong>the</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong> Khaybar, "March at a moderate pace until you reach <strong>the</strong>ir field. <strong>The</strong>n<br />

invite <strong>the</strong>m to accept Islaam, explaining to <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> rights due to Allaah that are<br />

compulsory for <strong>the</strong>m to fulfil. By Allaah! If Allaah uses you to guide even a<br />

single person, it is better for you than red camels."<br />
