Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Mas'ood %83@!2j narrates that when Rasulullaah<br />

once saw from <strong>the</strong>ir faces <strong>the</strong> extreme hunger that his companions were<br />

suffering, he said, "Hear <strong>the</strong> glad tidings that <strong>the</strong> time will soon come when each<br />

<strong>of</strong> you shall have a dish <strong>of</strong>,Thareed to eat every morning and evening." <strong>The</strong>y<br />

asked, "0 Rasulullaah m! Will we be better <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong>n?" "No," replied Rasulullaah<br />

m, "you are better <strong>of</strong>f today than during that time." (I)<br />

Hadhrat Muhammad bin Seereen says, "Three consecutive days would pass by a<br />

companion <strong>of</strong> Rasulullaah @@ without him having anything to eat. He would<br />

<strong>the</strong>n toast a piece <strong>of</strong> lea<strong>the</strong>r and eat it. If he found nothing, he would tie a stone<br />

to (his stomach to keep) his back (straight)."(2)<br />

Some <strong>Sahabah</strong> i43GWj Collapse in Salaah because<br />

<strong>of</strong> extreme Hunger and Weakness<br />

Hadhrat Fudhaala bin Ubayd W%% narrates that when Rasulullaah k%% used to<br />

lead <strong>the</strong> salaah, many men used to collapse in <strong>the</strong> salaah because <strong>of</strong> starvation.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y were <strong>the</strong> men <strong>of</strong> Suffa. (Seeing <strong>the</strong>m) Some Bedouins would comment that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were insane. After completing <strong>the</strong> salaah, Rasulullaah would turn to<br />

<strong>the</strong>m and say, "If you knew what Allaah has for you las reward for your suffering),<br />

you would wish<br />

that your hunger and poverty should increase." (3)<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Sahabah</strong> '@,G@ Eat Leaves while Out in <strong>The</strong><br />

path <strong>of</strong> Allaah and O<strong>the</strong>r Incidents <strong>of</strong> how <strong>the</strong>y<br />

Suffered extreme Hunger<br />

Hadhrat Anas narrates that seven <strong>Sahabah</strong> i@!%@!&j used to survive by<br />

sucking onto one date and eating fallen leaves until <strong>the</strong>ir mouths would be filled<br />

with sores. (4)<br />

Hadhrat Abu Hurayra says that <strong>the</strong>y were seven <strong>Sahabah</strong> iBGbW who<br />

were suffering from intense hunger when Rasulullaah @&! gave him seven<br />

dates, one for each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. (5)<br />

Hadhrat Abu Hurayra W@!& narrates that severe hunger caused him to leave his<br />

Gouse one day and head for <strong>the</strong> Masjid. <strong>The</strong>re he met a group <strong>of</strong> <strong>Sahabah</strong> @E@kM<br />

who asked him what.it was that made him leave home at that hour. When he<br />

informed <strong>the</strong>m that it was hunger that made him leave <strong>the</strong> house, <strong>the</strong>y said, "By<br />

Allaah! It is nothing but hunger that has also made us also leave our homes."<br />

<strong>The</strong>y stood up and went to Rasulullaah who asked <strong>the</strong>m, 'What brings you<br />

here at this hour?" <strong>The</strong>y replied, "0 Rasulullaah m! Severe hunger brings us<br />

here." Rasulullaah <strong>the</strong>n sent for a plate that contained some dates and gave<br />
