Rebuking Someone Who had not Completed Forty<br />

Days in <strong>the</strong> Path <strong>of</strong> Allaah<br />

Hadhrat Zaid bin Abi Habeeb narrates that when a man once came to Hadhrat<br />

Umar BCWj, Hadhrat Umar 9Gw asked, "Where have you been?" "I have been<br />

guarding <strong>the</strong> ,borders," <strong>the</strong> man replied. Hadhrat Umar @CWj asked fur<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

"How many days did you spend on guard?" "Thirty days," was <strong>the</strong> reply.<br />

Hadhrat Umar %W&$ commented, "Why did you ra<strong>the</strong>r not complete forty<br />

days?" ( ' )<br />

Spending Three Periods <strong>of</strong> Forty Days in<br />

<strong>the</strong> path <strong>of</strong> Allaah<br />

<strong>The</strong> Incident <strong>of</strong> a Woman and <strong>the</strong> Decision <strong>of</strong><br />

Hadhrat Ibn Jurayj narrates that someone whom he regards to be a truthful<br />

person informed him that as Hadhrat Umar %Gm was patrolling (<strong>the</strong> streets <strong>of</strong><br />

Madinah), he overheard a wom;iij saying:<br />

" <strong>The</strong> night is long and its ends have become dark<br />

/ am unable to sleep because /have no beloved to fondle<br />

Were it not for fear <strong>of</strong>Allaah, which is something without a match<br />

every end <strong>of</strong> this bed would be shaken furious&"<br />

When Hadhrat Umar B,GW> asked her what <strong>the</strong> matter was, she replied, "My<br />

husband<br />

has been away for several months and I have great desire for him."<br />

Hadhrat Umar B,GWj asked, "Have you no evil intentions?" "Allaah forbid!" she<br />

exclaimed. Hadhrat Umar %WWj <strong>the</strong>n said to her, "Control yourself for 1 shall<br />

sent a message to him."<br />

When Hadhrat Umar ?&= had done this, he went to (his-daughter) Hadhrat<br />

Hafsa and asked, "I wish to ask you something that worries me, so do<br />

remove my worries from me. Tell me after how long a period d0es.a woman start<br />

desiring for her husband?" Hadhrat Hafsa J@BISj cast down her gazes out <strong>of</strong><br />

modesty. ~adhrat Umar B,C= said, 'Verily Allaah does not shy away from <strong>the</strong><br />

truth." She <strong>the</strong>n motioned with her hands to indicate three months, o<strong>the</strong>rwise<br />

four.<br />

Hadhrat Umar B,G@ <strong>the</strong>n wrote (to <strong>the</strong> governors <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> regions) that no<br />

army was to be kept away (from home) for more than four months. (2)<br />

Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Umar SGWj narrates Hadhrat Umar B,CW once left <strong>the</strong><br />

house at night. He <strong>the</strong>n happened to overhear a woman recite <strong>the</strong> following<br />

couplet:<br />

(1) AIBidaaya wan Nihaaya (Vo1.4 Pg.157).<br />

(2) Abdur Razzaaq, as quoted in Kanzul Ummaal(Vo1.8 Pg.308).
