<strong>The</strong> Martyrdom <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Baraa bin Maalik<br />

s,g&$ in Persia<br />

Hadhrat Anas 53GWj narrates, "1 came to (my bro<strong>the</strong>r) Baraa bin Maalik<br />

while he was singing something. 1 said, 'Allaah has given you something (<strong>the</strong><br />

Qur'aan) that is better (than <strong>the</strong> poems you sing).' He replied, 'Do you fear that I<br />

shall die on my bed? Never! I swear by Allaah that He will never deprive me (<strong>of</strong><br />

martyrdom). I have already killed a hundred Kuffaar apart from those whom I<br />

killed with <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs."' ('1<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r narration states that when <strong>the</strong> Muslims retreated during <strong>the</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong><br />

Aqaba in Persia, Hadhrat Baraa bin Maalik 3GGj stood up and mounted his<br />

horse as ano<strong>the</strong>r person guided it from behind. He <strong>the</strong>n said to his companions,<br />

"Terrible is <strong>the</strong> habit that you people have made <strong>the</strong> enemy accustomed to (by<br />

being repeatedly defeated)!" He <strong>the</strong>n led <strong>the</strong> attack against <strong>the</strong> enemy and Allaah<br />

gave victory to <strong>the</strong> Muslims. It was on that day that Hadhrat Baraa @GWj was<br />

martyred. (2)<br />

<strong>The</strong> Thoughts <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Umar s,G(@@3 when<br />

Hadhrat Uthmaan bin Madh'oon sG&@j Passed<br />

Away without being Martyred<br />

Hadhrat Ubaydullaah bin Abdullaah bin Utba 3Gw says that <strong>the</strong> news reached<br />

him that Hadhrat Umar bin Khattaab WBWj said, "When Uthmaan bin Madh'oon<br />

$3EW died naturally without being martyred, his status dropped in my eyes. 1<br />

said to myself, 'Look at this man who was extremely abstinent from <strong>the</strong> world<br />

and <strong>the</strong>n passed away without being martyred!' Uthmaan &GWj stayed in this<br />

position in my estimation until Rasulullaah @@ passed away. I <strong>the</strong>n said,<br />

'Shame on me! Even <strong>the</strong> best <strong>of</strong> people pass away naturally.' When Abu Bakr<br />

passed away naturally, I said, 'Shame on me! Even <strong>the</strong> best <strong>of</strong> us pass<br />

away naturally.' <strong>The</strong> status <strong>of</strong> Uthmaan bin Madh'oon %UWj was <strong>the</strong>n<br />

restored to <strong>the</strong> position it previously enjoyed in my sight." (3)<br />

"JL&J once asked, "0 people! Who is <strong>the</strong> bravest person?" "You are,<br />

0 Ameerul Mu'mineen," <strong>the</strong> people submitted. Hadhrat Ali 3,GWj <strong>the</strong>n said,<br />

"Although I have defeated everyone who has confronted me, I want you people to<br />

tell me who is <strong>the</strong> bravest person." "Who <strong>the</strong>n?" <strong>the</strong> people said, "Who is <strong>the</strong><br />

bravest person?" Hadhrat Ali SG&j replied, "He was Abu Bakr 3G&. We had<br />

constructed a shed for Rasulullaah @& during <strong>the</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong> Badr and <strong>the</strong>n asked<br />
