<strong>The</strong> Bravery <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Sa'd bin Abi<br />

Waqqaas<br />

Hadhrat Sa'd $@@&j is <strong>the</strong> First Person to Fire an<br />

Arrow in <strong>the</strong> Path <strong>of</strong> Allaah<br />

Hadhrat Zuhri reports that Rasulullaah @& once sent an expedition to a place<br />

called Raabigh that was situated on one end <strong>of</strong> Hijaaz. Hadhrat Sa'd bin Abi<br />

Waqqaas SGw was also part <strong>of</strong> this expedition. When <strong>the</strong> Mushrikeen<br />

attacked <strong>the</strong> Muslims, Hadhrat Sa'd %lLw defended <strong>the</strong>m with his arrows<br />

and was <strong>the</strong> first person to fire and arrow in <strong>the</strong> path <strong>of</strong> Allaah. This was <strong>the</strong><br />

first battle fought in Islaam. Concerning his archery, Hadhrat Sa'd bin Abi<br />

Waqqaas 9Bwj recited <strong>the</strong> following couplets (which meant):<br />

" Behold! Has <strong>the</strong> news reached Rasu/ullaah ik%% yet<br />

that 1 have defended my companions with my arrowheads?<br />

Using <strong>the</strong>m, 1 made <strong>the</strong> enemy flee<br />

over every type <strong>of</strong>ground, hard and s<strong>of</strong>l<br />

No archer fighting <strong>the</strong> enemy can be counted<br />

Who has fired an arrow before me, 0 Rasu/u/laah @& "(2)<br />

Hadhrat Sa'd bin Abi Waqqaas !&.%@3j Kills Three<br />

People with a Single Arrow During <strong>the</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong><br />

Uhud<br />

Hadhrat Ibn Shihaab narrates that Hadhrat Sa'd bin Abi Waqqaas killed<br />

three people with a single arrow during <strong>the</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong> Uhud. When <strong>the</strong><br />

Mushrikeen first shot <strong>the</strong> arrow at <strong>the</strong> Muslims, Hadhrat Sa'd Si3%&= shot it back<br />

at <strong>the</strong>m (killing one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m). When <strong>the</strong> Mushrikeen again fired <strong>the</strong> same arrow<br />

back, Hadhrat Sa'd %lLW% shot it back at <strong>the</strong>m a second time, killing ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

man. When <strong>the</strong> arrow came back, Hadhrat Sa'd !3Gwj fired it back at <strong>the</strong>m a<br />

third time, taking <strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> yet ano<strong>the</strong>r Mushrik. Everyone was astonished by<br />

what Hadhrat Sa'd 3.- had done. He said to <strong>the</strong>m, "<strong>The</strong> arrow was handed to<br />

me by none o<strong>the</strong>r than"Nabi @&." Rasulullaah @$$ said to him, "May my<br />

parents be sacrificed for you." (3)<br />

Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Mas'ood ~.G@ says that during <strong>the</strong> Battle <strong>of</strong> Badr,<br />

Hadhrat Sa'd bin Abi Waqqaas G.lGW fought with Rasulullaah @$$ in <strong>the</strong> roles<br />

<strong>of</strong> both cavalry and infantry (according to ano<strong>the</strong>r interpretation, although<br />

Hadhrat Sa'd %,Gw was part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> infantry, he fought as efficiently as a<br />

cavalryman). (4)<br />
