recited <strong>the</strong> Shahaadah <strong>of</strong> truth. Rasulullaah @% said to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sahabah</strong> W,Wj,<br />

"Educate your bro<strong>the</strong>r about his Deen, teach him <strong>the</strong> Qur'aan and free his<br />

prisoner." i<br />

When <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sahabah</strong> W,- had done as <strong>the</strong>y were commanded, Hadhrat Umayr<br />

!WW6 said, "0 Rasulullaah @@! I made tremendous efforts to extinguish <strong>the</strong><br />

Deen <strong>of</strong> Allaah and I used to cause great harm to those who followed <strong>the</strong> Deen <strong>of</strong><br />

Allaah. I would now like you to permit me to go to Makkah and invite <strong>the</strong> people<br />

towards Allaah, His Rasool @@ and Islaam. Perhaps Allaah shall guide <strong>the</strong>m. If<br />

<strong>the</strong>y do not accept, I shall cause harm to <strong>the</strong>m because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir religion as I used<br />

to cause harm to your companions because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir Deen." Rasulullaah @% gave<br />

his permission and he arrived in Makkah.<br />

After Hadhrat Umayr %'@Wj had left Makkah, Safwaan bin Umayyah had been<br />

telling <strong>the</strong> people, "Rejoice at <strong>the</strong> news that will come to you in a few days, which<br />

will make you forget <strong>the</strong> incident <strong>of</strong> Badr." Safwaan used to enquire about<br />

Hadhrat Umayr 5XW6 from every traveller (coming from Madinah) someone<br />

arrived and informed him that Hadhrat Umayr @,G= had accepted Islaam.<br />

Safwaan <strong>the</strong>n took an oath saying that he will never speak to Umayr again and<br />

will never do him any good turn. ('1<br />

A Large Number <strong>of</strong> People Accept Islaam at <strong>the</strong><br />

Hands <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Umayr %Gm<br />

Ibn Jareer has also narrated this incident from Hadhrat Urwa B,GW but with <strong>the</strong><br />

addition that when Hadhrat Umayr arrived in Makkah, he stayed <strong>the</strong>re<br />

inviting people to Islaam and harassing those who opposed him. A large number<br />

<strong>of</strong> people accepted Islaam at his hands. (2)<br />

<strong>the</strong> Conversion <strong>of</strong> Hadhrat Umayr t<br />

Hadhrat Urwa bin Zubayr WWi4 has also reported a narration which states that<br />

<strong>the</strong> Muslims were overjoyed when Hadhrat Umayr bin Wahab ?3dw accepted<br />

Islaam. Hadhrat Umar %l!3Wj used to say, "<strong>The</strong>re is no doubt that I liked a pig<br />

more than him <strong>the</strong> day he arrived. However, today he is more beloved to me than<br />

some <strong>of</strong> my own children." (3)<br />

Hadhrat Arnr bin Umayyah 5Bl3Wj narrates that when Hadhrat Umayr ~ , -<br />

returned to Makkah after accepting Islaam, he proceeded straight to his house<br />

without meeting Safwaan bin Umayyah. He made it public that he had accepted<br />

has verified that <strong>the</strong> chain <strong>of</strong> narrators is sound.<br />

(3) Tabraani has also narrated a similar report from Hadhrat Anas WV&%. Haythami (Vo1.8 813.287)<br />

has commented on <strong>the</strong> chain <strong>of</strong> narrators. Ibn Mandah has also narrated it but Isaaba (Vo1.3<br />

Pg.36) has commentary on <strong>the</strong> chain <strong>of</strong> narrators.
