Chapter 6: Sociality<br />

Hierarchy<br />

This is a government administered by an authoritarian<br />

group of characters classified by ability,<br />

economic, or social standing. Sometimes, this is referred<br />

to as a militocracy. Males tend to establish<br />

hierarchies, while females prefer floating power<br />

sources 1 .<br />

Magocracy<br />

A government wherein a mage or mages (or<br />

sorcerer or sorcerers) rule is a magocracy. In primitive<br />

societies, a leader may be elected because they<br />

are believed to be gifted with magic.<br />

Meritocracy<br />

A meritocracy is a government wherein responsibility<br />

is awarded to those who exhibit the most<br />

effort. A meritocracy is often associated with a hierarchy<br />

or pedocracy.<br />

Monarchy<br />

A government wherein rulership is inherited,<br />

such as with a king and queen, is a monarchy.<br />

Monarchy is often associated with feudality. Rebellion<br />

against the government is an offense against<br />

the king, usually punishable by death.<br />

Oligarchy<br />

A government wherein the few or a small<br />

faction rule is an oligarchy. This form of government<br />

is similar to, yet distinct from, an autocracy.<br />

Pedocracy<br />

A government wherein the educated and<br />

scholarly rule is a pedocracy. Educational standards<br />

are strict. Education is free to all citizens, though<br />

strict rules regulate its pursuit. A pedocracy tends<br />

to be associated with a bureaucracy.<br />

Plutocracy<br />

This is a government wherein the wealthy<br />

rule. A plutocracy is a form of aristocracy. The<br />

wealthy usually take measures to assure that the they<br />

remain in power, and the poor remain powerless.<br />

Republic<br />

A government wherein representatives are<br />

elected to represent their electorate as they make<br />

policy decisions is a republic 2 . The duty of each<br />

representative is to represent their constituents.<br />

Theocracy<br />

A theocracy is a government wherein rule is<br />

administered by a god or religious officials. Theocracy<br />

has been considered a form of oligarchy 3 . Usually,<br />

a religion dominates a theocracy, and characters<br />

who disagree with the religion must be either banished,<br />

converted, or killed. Few religions are tolerant<br />

of dissidents.<br />

Ochlocracy<br />

A goverment wherein the mob rules is an<br />

ochlocracy. Mobs usually become factioned into<br />

families. Families compete for power in an ochlocracy.<br />
