well as making illegal keys or tools for thieves. Apprentices<br />

must pay 200 s.p. to join the guild as a<br />

journeyman, though sons of members may join for<br />

free. If any member has more charcoal than needed,<br />

then it may only be sold to other members at a fixed<br />

price, and no member may purchase more than necessary<br />

for their work. Violators regarding charcoal<br />

pay 100 s.p. A master may not have more than 2<br />

apprentices or own a slave; otherwise, a fee of 100<br />

s.p. is charged.<br />

Once an apprentice for 7 years, they may<br />

apply for employment as a journeyman with their<br />

guild.<br />

For a journeyman to become a master, they<br />

must be able financially to open their own shop,<br />

and receive the approval of the guild. To receive<br />

approval, they must pass a Persuasion skill check.<br />

The TH begins at 30 and is decreased by 1 for every<br />

period of 6 months in which the journeyman has<br />

worked locally with the guild. The Aedile may overrule<br />

this skill check or apply any modifier deemed<br />

appropriate.<br />

Clerk<br />

This occupation consists of educated assistants,<br />

also called notaries, who perform clerical duties<br />

for churches, guilds, and governments.<br />

Clerks are in the business of drawing up<br />

commercial contracts and other personal matters,<br />

such as marriage agreements and wills. Notarial<br />

cartularies are large books in which clerks or notaries<br />

copy the formal and legal copy of a contract.<br />

The most general form of available contract<br />

is the ‘promissio et conventio,’ the promise and<br />

agreement. These contracts begin with “I promise<br />

and agree that...” The parent, guardian, or future<br />

pupil makes the promise and agreement to the master.<br />

If a future pupil is underage, then the parent or<br />

guardian promises formally to the master. A fine,<br />

usually 100 s.p., is noted in case the contract is broken.<br />

The standard conditions are that the apprentice<br />

will serve for a specified period of time to learn<br />

the art or trade of the master. This agreement binds<br />

the apprentice not to flee or marry without the permission<br />

of the master.<br />

Another form of contract is the rental agreement.<br />

These contracts begin with “I rent and concede...”<br />

A son or daughter is rented to the master.<br />

The parent grants the master virtual authority over<br />

the rented child. In turn, the master gives the apprentice<br />

food, lodging, and experience in their occupation.<br />

In both the promise and agreement as well<br />

as the rental agreement contracts, it is common for<br />

the master to promise to keep their apprentice in<br />

sickness and in health. However, some masters include<br />

a clause stating that days lost due to illness are<br />

to be added to the end of the term. Many times, an<br />
