Bailiff<br />

The duty of a bailiff is to be a chief law<br />

officer and manager of a lord’s manor. He represents<br />

the lord to both the villagers and strangers.<br />

Often, he protects local villagers against characters<br />

from another lord.<br />

The main concern of a bailiff is management.<br />

The bailiff can read and write. He must make<br />

sure that crops and stock are tended properly, and<br />

that the manor is supplied from outside of the village.<br />

A formidable list of purchases include millstones,<br />

iron, building timber and stone, firewood,<br />

nails, horseshoes, carts, cartwheels, axles, iron tires,<br />

salt, candles, parchment, cloth, utensils for dairy and<br />

kitchen, slate, thatch, quicklime, quicksilver, tar, baskets,<br />

livestock, and food.<br />

There are 2 other uncommon officials who<br />

are subordinate to the bailiff: the macebearer<br />

(claviger) and the serjeant. These subordinate officials<br />

are soldiers from a nearby town or city. The<br />

reeve is the chief official who is subordinate to the<br />

bailiff. The bailiff ’s residence is the lord’s manor<br />

house. The main room, the hall, is the setting for<br />

the manorial court, but otherwise it remains at the<br />

disposal of the bailiff. Daily wages are typically 10<br />

s.p.<br />

Advancement Points: For every legal case<br />

won against another village, 10 AP is acquired. For<br />

every month that the lord’s manor has been supplied<br />

properly, 10 AP is acquired.<br />

Training: None.<br />

Guild: None.<br />

Baker<br />

This occupation specializes in baking bread<br />

and preparing various edible products. Flour, the<br />

main ingredient, is purchased from millers. Prices<br />

of different loaves of bread are legally fixed for a<br />

baker, as are the weights. Bakers must mark their<br />

bread with their own trademark. A baker who cheats<br />

on quality is sent to the stocks with 1 of their fraudulent<br />

loaves hung around their neck. Daily wages are<br />

typically 7 s.p.<br />

Ability Requirements: Intelligence 75.<br />

Gender: Female bakers are uncommon.<br />

Race: Any but ogre, human are the most<br />

common.<br />

Disposition: Any.<br />

Temperament: Any.<br />

Sociality: Peasant or serf.<br />

Religion: Any.<br />

Skills: Cooking + 5 and Haggling + 3.<br />

Equipment: Baking requires a hearth.<br />

Magic Points: Inapplicable.<br />

Advancement Points: For every loaf of<br />

bread baked, 1/10 th of 1 AP is acquired.<br />

Training: None.<br />

Guild: Bakers’ Guild. Each apprentice must<br />

serve 4 years. By guild statute, the maximum allowable<br />

profit is 4 s.p. per measure of grain.<br />

Once an apprentice for 4 years, they may<br />

apply for employment as a journeyman with their<br />

guild.<br />

For a journeyman to become a master, they<br />

must be able financially to open their own shop,<br />

and receive the approval of the guild. To receive<br />

approval, they must pass a Persuasion skill check.<br />

The TH begins at 30 and is decreased by 1 for every<br />

period of 6 months in which the journeyman has<br />

worked locally with the guild. The Aedile may overrule<br />

this skill check or apply any modifier deemed<br />

appropriate.<br />
