Sunday prayer
58 O kind, merciful Lord,
hark, 1 pray, unto my prayer,
in life and upon my deathbed.
Grant me, 1 pray, aIl the facuIties of my mind
so that, without wavering in Thy holy faith,
the affairs of my final hour might be in order.
64 And grant me then the strength and grace
of duly repenting of my sin s,
and right1y making my confession
in order to gain forgiveness for all my sins,
to receive Thy holy body worthily,
and the rest of the prescribed sacraments.
70 And since the devil wiIl then come and tempt me,
with all his cunning to find a way to deceive me,
send Thy saints, o Lord, in myaid,
lest the enemy should overcome me in my final hour.
74 Receive then, 1 pray, my soul in Thy glory,
as it is with Thy holy blood that it has been redeemed
that 1 might look upon Thy visage there,
and honour Thy majesty in communion with the saints.
78 Thou dost dress and undress in the morning and at night,
thou dost eat and sup on behalf of thy body.
Thus, to save thy soul for the glory of God,
be not repeIled from doing those acts;
if unable every day, then every week on Sundays.
83 This is the great blindness 1 see in ourselves
in which we work to please our enemy so,
and ignore God, our Saviour,
even in our recognition of this injustice.
87 1 am astounded to see how many of us, 1 the first among them,
are so strongly tied to this world,
in spite of seeing so many deceived by him.
Those living until now he cast out naked,
and those in the future may not get away.
92 When every one dies there are three phases:
the body is buried under the cold earth to rot;
his possessions are shared out among his debtors;
the poor soul travels on to where it may,
lacking company on such an uneasy journey.
