v. A SECRET LOVE
1 A lovely, genteellady has stolen my heart.
When thinking of her, I am unable to swaHow.
Would that she loved me as I love her!
I dare not approach her, lest she be offended.
5 If only I had a mirror that would have such a power
that through it I could secretly show her my heart
and therein see her own thoughts towards me
In order never to cause her the least offense.
9 She was created beautiful to torment me so.
Night and day I am severely tormented
If ever I meet her, my heart is petrified with fear,
not even daring to tell her of my suffering.
13 If she only knew my mind, she would surely love me.
If I were to be king, she would be queen.
If she so wished so, we could be joined together.
Her children and mine would all be brothers and sisters.
17 If I were to teH her my heart,
and she to respond to me harshly,
quicker than any dart would my heart be rento
I should most certainly fall dead on the spot.
21 The morning star stands out from the others;
Likewise among women she who torments me.
So fair and gentle is she that I am being driven mad.
Happily born is he who wiIl lie in her arms.
25 As is my longing is directed towards her,
May God steer her heart to turn towards me.
To be penetrated through and through by my pain,
and gladly do as I desire.
