11. DISAPPOINTMENT BE1WEEN LOVERS
1 üthers may have someone else in their thoughts but for me 'tis St, Mary;
this good Lady who helps us all.
3 I should like lovers to pay attention
for they will surely hear valuable counsel.
I should give them counsel on how to find true love.
May it be etched forever in their minds.
7 1, too, have had sorne loves,
but from them I benefitted not at all:
only great grief, a lost soul, both hers and mine;
for one pIeasure in love there are a thousand sorrows.
11 Could there be a single love that is faithful,
that is not swayed by flattery or jewels?
The one he thinks best may often turn against him,
and the best may turn out to be the worst, at least for the soul.
15 Illicit love will always be treacherous;
Truth is clear when death is near;
AH the pleasures enjoyed by then will have vanished;
only the sin is left to go on tormenting;
If he has indulged in many pleasures, he shall suffer many affiictions.
20 I should wish for a love who is ever true,
who would abet me even after life, in death.
I should gladly havq such a love in life;
life in this world is brief, eternal in the other.
24 I have been around the world but I have yet to find another,
as faithful as the good Mother of God, full of grace;
no one is worthy of Her love;
let us serve Her well for she already loves uso
28 All loves are vain but love of Her;
the others will fail us when we need them most;
we sinners die before we know it,
thus if She fails to help us we are doomed!
32 Let us all take the good Lady as our love,
Let us leave the others and honour Her!
If we do that we ourselves shall be honoured;
Regardless of the others, without Her, we are all doomed.
