IX. A REQUEST FOR LOVE
1 Blessed fortune! What a delightful meeting!
Now I have before mine eyes what I desired.
3 - My dearest dear, do right unto me!
Give back what thou hast taken away or else return it to me.
5 - I have nothing of thine 1 know of.
Thou hast frightened me and I know not why.
7 - Fear not, thou art not in peril,
at our trial shall there be no judge but thee.
9 - I have done no wrong to be in peril,
nothing for which I need a trial.
11 - Then my beloved, I shall tell thee the truth.
Thou hast robbed me and I mean to enjoy what is mine.
13 - I am no thief who goes about robbing.
Now,I pray, do not defame me if I am not guilty.
15 - For me thou art a thief, yea, a great thief.

17 - 1 am not learned, speak clearly
if thou dost wish to be well understood.
19 - That which a man most desires, and which is his greatest possession:
Being at peace in his heart and sleeping soundly.
21 Now can I get no sleep nor rest in my heart.
These too, I have lost, my love, because of thee.
23 In thinking back, thou hast robbed me grievously.
Thou art greatly indebted to me, and so, I pray, be good to me.
25 - If thou hast lost these, why am I to blame?
As far as I know, they have not come to my house from anywhere.
27 - One day, not long ago, when thou wert deep in thought,
I fell so much in love with thee that I have been suffering ever since.
29 - In that way art thou indeed glib, thou canst play the fool well.
The sorrows of which thou speakest seem to be truly great.
