IV. VERSES FOR THE MARRIED
1 Oh Lord, banish another's wife from my mind.
She is captivated and 1 am captivated by her.
3 The one who captivates me is captivated by another.
My destiny has willed that 1 should be captive of both.
1 shall be charmed by one as long as 1 live,
but as for the other, never unless forced too
7 He who chooses to love another's wife,
will have more displeasure than pleasure.
Such encounters will be few and full of fear,
and misfortune may arise when least expected.
11 'Tis utter foolishness to love another's wife,
for each satisfaction there will be a thousand dissatisfactions;
1 may see her, but not talk to her, what torment for me!
And when she lies with her husband, 1 can only sigh.
15 1 may not go where she is except at my peril,
and then she may not have the time.
Even if she has, she might be afraid and turn back.
When 1 desire her most, the other embraces her.
19 Should 1 succeed in sowing the field,
though the straw and grain might be mine,
1 may not have one or the other;
only ingratitude for my work and what was won is lost.
My right belongs to the other.
And the son might even marry the daughter one day!
25 No one wishes to share his love;
1 know not about others, but in this 1 have sinned.
How it pains me so in seeing her with him!
They are frolicking, 1 am sulking, then raving.
29 1 could never speak ill ofjealous people.
1 would not wish for anyone to touch the one 1 love.
Once 1 was in love with another's wife.
1 was close to despair, so jealous was 1 of him.
