ÐV. JUSTINO KANKINIO TEOLOGIJOJE
The Concept of Philosophy in the Theology of St Justin the Martyr
SUMMARY
In this article the author analyses the concept of philosophy in the theology of Saint Justin the Martyr,
the most prominent among the Fathers of the Church of the second century. Following the reception of
the Gospel in Greek-speaking society, the Fathers of the Church created the sythesis between philosophy
and the evangelical message. Justin the Martyr was the first who attempted to create a philosophical
justification for the sythesis. He understands philosophy as knowledge which originates from the
interaction between Logos and the original likeness of humans to Logos, namely logos spermatikos,
and, thus, their innate capacity to know the Logos. Christians are true philosophers because they know
the full revelation of Logos in Christ. From this perspective, Justin calls Christians also those Greek
philosophers who, by means of innate capacity, could reach the knowledge of Logos.
