Abstract: The Psalt Musicians in Oltenia and their Contribution
to the Process of Romanization of the Byzantine Music
The monasteries from Oltenia are certainly the most adequate
spaces for the development of the ecclesiastical art and culture
from the Middle Age till today. The presence of the musical
manuscript in this space shows that the byzantine music was a very
important preoccupation on this area. Later, this direction has
consolidated in professional schools, by Protopsaltis and
professors who start the technic of singing in The Church. Time
after time, the byzantine music became a precious part in the
practical statement of the Church. In Oltenia, this legacy is
represented by famous compositors like: Anton Pann, Chesarie de
la Hurezi, Gheorghe Gherontie, Ilie Stoianovici Jianu, Oprea
Demetrescu, Sister Platonida, Dimitrie C. Popescu, Hristea
Grigoriu, Toma Paraipan, Nicolae Călinescu, Ion Mardale, Chiril
Popescu etc. In our study we try to briefly highlight their artistic
work and personality.
