Tze-ki Hon, The Yijing and Chinese Politics: Classical Commentary and
Literati Activism in the Northern Song Period, 960-1127. Albany : State
University of New York Press (SUNY Séries in Chinese Philosophy and
works from Hu Yuan, Zhang Zai, and Cheng Yi as his principal texts.
Second, he compares the views of thèse three with each other. Third, he
compares the views of his principal authors with some of their contemporaries:
Hu with Li Gou and Ouyang Xiu, Zhang with Sima Guang and
Shao Yong, and Cheng with Su Shi. Fourth, Hon asks how thèse works
speak to what he identifies as the foremost issues in political culture of
their respective eras: the effort to reestablish civil governance and a leading
rôle for the literati in officialdom prior to 1022 (Hu Yuan), the need
for governmental reform in response to military, fiscal, and personnel
