Language – style – genre Meetings of PhD candidates in Katowice Summary The volume Language – style – genre. Meetings of PhD candidates in Katowice consists of the articles written by PhD candidates at the Faculty of Philology at the University of Silesia. For many of them, it is a real academic “debut”, the first public appearance, the first presentation of their thoughts, the first publication, and, thus, submission to the academic opinion. Some of the authors presented their works within the activity of the Student Academic Circle of Linguists. It gave them a chance to take part in conferences organized by the circle, whether it be the local or all-Poland ones. For all of them, the volume means enetring the academic community. It is the first step in their academic future, both on an individual scale for particular authors, and a collective one for the whole academic circle in Katowice and Poland. A thematic frame of the meeting is broad. It involves three important elements of the contemporary linguistic thought: language, style, genre. These thematic issues are present in numerous academic publications from the University of Silesia. Different linguistic areas and different methodological approaches meet here. The studies concern different “levels” of the language. A synchronic perspective permeates into the diachronic one. Apart from the trends to be observed in the research for many years, the projects introducing the new thoughts appear. Danuta Ostaszewska, in her overview publication, The Institute of Polish at the University of Silesia. Academic prospects and achievements at the turn of the 21 st century (Katowice 2005), indicates the academic circles that have been interested in the very subject-matter for many years. It is linguistic stylistics, sociolinguistics, anthropological linguistics, social communication, Silesia-oriented issues, historio-linguistic studies, the research on the language system and lexicography. She also points to the latter-day works, i.e. studies on talk, genology, metalexical reflection and research taking into account a glottodidactic perspective. The volume Language – style – genre. Meetings of PhD candidates in Katowice discusses most of these aspects.
256 Summary The work is composed of the texts written by the researchers from several philological domains. The (Polish) linguists predominate, however, neophilologists, literature researchers, literature theorists and didactics also contribute to the volume. The joint publication constituted the forum accelerating the exchange of thoughts, experiences, books, as well as search for the common language.
