ANS 102 Introduction to Animal Industry<br />

Overview of livestock and poultry industries and practices. Includes production, marketing and distribution. Also includes<br />

application of scientific principles to health, behavior, nutrition, reproduction and performance.<br />

Offered: Fall, Spring.<br />

ANS 170 Equine Anatomy and Physiology<br />

3 cr. hrs. 5 periods (2 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Basic instruction in the structure and function of the horse. Includes an introduction to the scientific method as it relates to<br />

the horse, anatomy and physiology of the equine species, and basics of conformation analysis.<br />

Information: Prepares the student for further studies in equine science.<br />

ANS 171 Horse Care and Management<br />

3 cr. hrs. 5 periods (2 lec., 3 lab)<br />

The care and management of the horse as a domestic companion animal. Includes basic veterinary requirements, feeds<br />

and feeding, stabling, and preventive health care.<br />

ANS 172 Horse Health I<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Basic instruction in equine animal science. Includes equine conformation disorders, basic equine nutrition and disorders of<br />

nutrition, parasitology, infectious diseases, and injury induced lameness.<br />

ANS 173 Horse Health II<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Advanced topics in equine animal science. Includes the anatomy and physiology of the equine nervous, endocrine, and<br />

reproductive system; reproductive physiology of the mare and the stallion; breeding management practices; foaling and<br />

the neonatal period; foal management; advanced techniques in equine reproduction; business management for the mare<br />

owner and the stallion service manager.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ANS 172.<br />

ANS 195 Introduction to Research in Animal Science<br />

1-3 cr. hrs. 1-3 periods (1-3 lec.)<br />

Introduction to the methods of research in Animal Science. Includes scientific laboratory procedures, experimental design,<br />

scientific writing, scientific ethics, and current research in working laboratories.<br />

Information:<br />

Three credit hours of Animal Science and consent of instructor are required before enrolling in this course.<br />

Content of study and its manner of execution must be developed through mutual agreement between the student and<br />

the instructor prior to enrollment in the course.<br />

ANS 196 Independent Study in Animal Science<br />

1-3 cr. hrs. 1-3 periods (1-3 lec.)<br />

Introductory study of a particular Animal Science subject or subjects to hone skills while working in an independent<br />

format.<br />

Three credit hours of Animal Science and consent of instructor are required before enrolling in this course.<br />

Content of study and its manner of execution must be developed through mutual agreement between the student and<br />

the instructor prior to enrollment in the course.<br />
