Overview of the role of phlebotomy as a healthcare profession. Includes the role of the phlebotomist within the culture of<br />

healthcare, conventions of laboratory organization and structure, the organization and purposes of laboratory<br />

departments, and the services a laboratory provides as an essential key to diagnosis. Also includes medical vocabulary,<br />

laboratory terminology, and basic anatomy and physiology with a focus on the circulatory system.<br />

PHB 162 Safety Standards in Phlebotomy<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

A study of phlebotomy safety practices and infection control in a laboratory setting. Includes quality controls, procedural<br />

controls, processing requirements, and transportation procedures. Also includes patient education, related legal guidelines,<br />

OSHA standards, and proper equipment operation.<br />

PHB 164 Professional Practices in Phlebotomy<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

A survey of professional practices in phlebotomy, including values, ethical behavior in the workplace, and workers’ rights<br />

and responsibilities. Includes stress management, development of positive personal communication skills, and concepts of<br />

teamwork. Also includes OSHA and other regulatory requirements.<br />

PHB 166LB Phlebotomy Laboratory Practice<br />

2 cr. hrs. 6 periods (6 lab)<br />

Laboratory practice performing phlebotomy and capillary collections, including proper order of draw, labeling, and<br />

specimen handling. Includes study of basic storage, transportation, and processing. Also includes proper laboratory<br />

conduct and safety.<br />

PHILOSOPHY — PHLEBOTOMY<br />

PHB 190LC Clinical Internship in Phlebotomy<br />

1-3 cr. hrs. 5-15 periods (5-15 lab)<br />

Capstone experience for phlebotomy students. Includes an externship in the field where students practice the skills and<br />

knowledge they gain during training, such as single and multi-draw venipuncture, capillary draws, storage and<br />

transportation of specimens, testing and processing specimens, legal and ethical behaviors and documentation, and<br />

professional conduct.<br />

Prerequisite(s): HCA 160, 162, 164 and 166LB.<br />

Information: Credit hours will vary depending on length of time needed for student to obtain required experience for<br />

certification.<br />
