MUS 052 Introduction to Ear Training<br />

2 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lec.)<br />

Ear training for individuals with little or no musical background. Includes identification of keys on a piano keyboard and<br />

notes on the musical staff (treble and bass clef), visual and aural recognition of intervals, and dictation and performance<br />

of simple rhythmic patterns. Also includes sight singing of simple melodies, identifying major and minor key signatures<br />

and scales, singing of major and minor scales, and intervals. Also includes aural identification of individual pitches within<br />

major scales, and listening to short melodic figures and playing them back on keyboards.<br />

Recommendation: Students considering music as a major are encouraged to take MUS 052 and 102 concurrently.<br />

MUS 055 Introduction to Piano<br />

2 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lec.)<br />

Basic principles and techniques of piano playing in a group situation. Includes study of major/minor scales and key<br />

signatures, chords, repertory pieces, technique and finger strength, and learning and practice methods. Also includes<br />

transposition of simple compositions, sight reading, and harmonizations of melodies.<br />

MUS 100 Guitar I<br />

2 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lec.)<br />

Development of the principles of guitar playing with emphasis on a variety of styles and guitar repertoire. Includes parts of<br />

the guitar, music symbols, tuning, playing position, right and left hand techniques, notes on the first through third strings,<br />

notes on the fourth string, thumb technique, chord strumming, and right-hand arpeggio patterns. Also includes notes on<br />

the fifth and sixth strings, sharps and flats, twelve (12) bar blues, right hand chord technique, and open position chords.<br />

MUS 101 Guitar II<br />

2 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lec.)<br />

Continuation of MUS 100. Includes more detailed development of guitar skills, musicianship, sight-reading, repertoire<br />

development, ensemble playing, and improvisation.<br />

Prerequisite(s): MUS 100.<br />

Information: Prerequisites may be waived with consent of instructor.<br />

MUS 102 Music Fundamentals<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Introduction to fundamentals of music designed to develop basic literacy in music. Includes definitions, notation, rhythm<br />

and meter, intervals, scales and transposition, key signatures, and triads. Also includes specific size of intervals, chords<br />

and harmony, simple forms, and analyzing music.<br />

Recommendation: Students considering music as a major are encouraged to concurrently enroll in MUS 052 and<br />

MUS 102.<br />

MUS 103 Music Theory Review<br />

1 cr. hrs. 1 periods (1 lec.)<br />

Intensive review of music fundamentals. Includes clefs and basic pitch notation, scales, key signatures, intervals, and triads.<br />

Information: May be taken three times for a maximum of three credit hours.<br />

Offered: Fall, Spring.<br />

MUS 108 <strong>Pima</strong> Jazz Band<br />

2 cr. hrs. 3 periods (1 lec., 2 lab)<br />

Rehearsal and performance of many styles of music in the jazz idiom. Includes progressive development of musical skills<br />

through interpretation of literature.<br />

Students chosen by audition.<br />

May be taken ten times for a maximum of twenty credit hours, but a maximum of 3 credits will apply toward the AGEC.<br />

MUS 111 Exploring Music through Piano<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Keyboard application skills and music fundamentals. Includes keyboard orientation, tonality, piano proficiency, musical<br />

structure, musical texture, and style. Also includes global topics of arts in education and society and historical/stylistic<br />

trends through the evolution of keyboard instruments and composition.<br />
