INTERPRETER TRAINING<br />

ITP 270 Beginning Sign to Voice<br />

4 cr. hrs. 4 periods (4 lec.)<br />

Interpreting basic sign language communication into the spoken word. Practical experience in consecutive and<br />

simultaneous sign to voice interpreting with increasingly complex and diverse materials. Includes applying the process of<br />

interpreting, discourse styles and registers, assignment considerations, physical considerations, and application of the<br />

Code of Professional Conduct. Also includes voicing considerations, linguistic/syntax, American Sign Language<br />

(ASL)/English comparisons, pre-and post-situational assessment, giving/receiving feedback, and professional issues.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ITP 210 and SLG 202.<br />

Information: Additional lab hours outside of class are required.<br />

ITP 280 Advanced Sign to Voice<br />

4 cr. hrs. 4 periods (4 lec.)<br />

Interpreting complex sign language structures into the spoken word. Includes voicing considerations, team interpreting,<br />

registers, word/phrase selection, current issues, and environmental dynamics.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ITP 270.<br />

Information: Additional lab hours are required outside of regularly scheduled class.<br />

Offered: Fall.<br />

ITP 285 Educational Interpreting/Transliterating<br />

4 cr. hrs. 4 periods (4 lec.)<br />

Interpreting in educational settings. Includes transliterating, professional readiness, settings and expectations, and legal<br />

and ethical issues.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ITP 250 or 280.<br />

Information: Additional hours may be required outside of regularly scheduled class.<br />

Offered: Spring.<br />

ITP 286 Video Relay Interpreting<br />

4 cr. hrs. 4 periods (4 lec.)<br />

Development of interpreting and transliteration skills and receptive and expressive skill refinement in video relay call<br />

situations. Includes FCC regulations, application of Code of Professional Conduct, call management, and specialized<br />

protocols. Also includes support systems, situational and language assessments, team interpreting, and equipment usage.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ITP 250, 280.<br />

Information: Prerequisite(s) may be waived with consent of instructor.<br />

Offered: Summer.<br />

ITP 289 Topics in Interpreting<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Continued development of interpreting and transliterating skills and receptive and expressive skills refinement in<br />

consecutive and simultaneous interpreting situations. Topics include specialized settings, specialized vocabulary,<br />

specialized protocols, support systems, situational and language assessment, facilitating the communication process, and<br />

preparation for national certification exams.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ITP 250, 280.<br />

Information: Additional lab hours may be required outside of regularly scheduled class.<br />

ITP 290 Interpreter Training Field Experience<br />

2 cr. hrs. 6 periods (1 lec., 5 lab)<br />

Supervised interpreting opportunities in community settings. Includes selection criteria, completion of documentation<br />

assignments for portfolio, problem solving, site orientation, student performance evaluations, observation of professional<br />

interpreters, Code of Professional Conduct in practice, professional job expectations, and current issues.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ITP 250.<br />

Offered: Spring.<br />

ITP 296 Independent Study in Interpreting<br />

1-3 cr. hrs. 3-9 periods (3-9 lab)<br />

Extensive practice in identified areas of expressive/receptive interpreting/transliterating under supervision of an instructor.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ITP 210, ITP 220 or 270.<br />

Information: Consent of instructor required before enrolling. Course content and performance objectives will be<br />

determined by conference between student and instructional faculty.<br />
