ARC 276 Archaeological Surveying I<br />

4 cr. hrs. 8 periods (2 lec., 6 lab)<br />

Techniques and methods for recognizing, locating and recording archaeological sites. Includes exploration methods, issues<br />

of cultural resource management, instrument skills, map use, and remote sensing application. Also includes natural<br />

resources associated with archaeological sites, application of field techniques, and documentation.<br />

Prerequisite(s):ANT/ARC 180 or concurrent enrollment.<br />

Recommendation: Consult instructor for alternative prerequisites.<br />

ARC 277 Archaeological Excavation II<br />

4 cr. hrs. 8 periods (2 lec., 6 lab)<br />

Continuation of ARC/ANT 275. Includes advanced excavation techniques, field crew supervision, and selected field<br />

projects. Also includes using museum collections, equipment, resources and facilities of the Archaeology Centre.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ANT/ARC 205 and ANT/ARC 265 or concurrent enrollment, ANT/ARC 275 and GLG 101.<br />

Recommendation: Consult instructor for alternative prerequisites before enrolling in this course.<br />

ARC 278 Archaeological Surveying II<br />

4 cr. hrs. 8 periods (2 lec., 6 lab)<br />

Continuation of ARC/ANT 276. Includes goals and objectives of archaeological exploration, archival investigation, planning<br />

field projects, and computer resources.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ANT/ARC 205 and ANT/ARC 265 or concurrent enrollment, ANT/ARC 276, and GLG 101.<br />

Recommendation: Consult instructor for alternative prerequisites before enrolling in this course.<br />

ARC 281 Global Positioning Systems<br />

1 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lab)<br />

Introduction to the technical use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) receivers in a field setting. Includes review of GPS<br />

vocabulary and concepts, comprehensive initialization of handheld GPS receivers, data collection with handheld GPS, the<br />

use of mapping software with data from handheld GPS, concepts of differential GPS, operation of and field data collection<br />

with static and RTK precision GPS, use of software packages for differential correction and map production. Also includes<br />

using equipment, resources and facilities of the Archaeology Center.<br />

ARC 284 Computer Cartography and CAD<br />

3 cr. hrs. 5 periods (2 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Cartographic techniques and hardware for computer generation of maps. Includes an introduction, methods and<br />

techniques, and application projects.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ANT/ARC/GEO/GIS 265 or concurrent enrollment, and CSA 101.<br />

Information: Same as ANT/GEO/GIS 284.<br />

ARC 286 Electronic and Digital Field Mapping<br />

4 cr. hrs. 8 periods (2 lec., 6 lab)<br />

Overview of the creation of electronic and digital maps in a field setting. Includes introduction, instrument operation, field<br />

data, producing maps, and computer applications.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ANT/ARC 265 and ANT/ARC/GIS 281.<br />

Recommendation: Consult instructor for alternative prerequisite(s).<br />

ARC 295 Field Projects<br />
