FSS 272 Coach Techniques/Practices<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Coaching Techniques and Practices Concepts and strategies for teaching athletes both new skills and fine tuning of existing<br />

skills. Includes preparing to teach skills, presenting, developing and maintaining skills, and cognitive processes involved in<br />

skills.<br />

Information: To be successful in this course, the student should have basic writing skills equivalent to the completion of<br />

WRT 100 or 106.<br />

Offered: Fall.<br />

FSS 273 Sport Physiology<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Principles of muscular, energy and endurance fitness training for peak performance. Includes focus on individual<br />

differences, muscular fitness components, energy systems, performance evaluation and training program development.<br />

Information: To be successful in this course, the student should have basic writing skills equivalent to the completion of<br />

WRT 100 or 106.<br />

Offered: Spring, Summer.<br />

FSS 276 Personal Trainer: Muscular Strength, Endurance, Flexibility<br />

3 cr. hrs. 4 periods (2 lec., 2 lab)<br />

Assessment and interpretation of results for individualized programs designed for muscular strength, endurance and<br />

flexibility. Includes pre-activity screening, assessment, interpretation of results, manipulation of variables in program<br />

design, and periodization.<br />

Prerequisite(s): FSS 234 or concurrent enrollment.<br />

Information: This course requires physical activity and is intended for students pursuing the Fitness Professional<br />

certificate.<br />

Offered: May not be offered, check class schedule.<br />

FSS 277 Personal Trainer: Cardiovascular Endurance/Body Composition<br />

3 cr. hrs. 4 periods (2 lec., 2 lab)<br />

Assessment and interpretation of testing results for individualized program design for cardiovascular training, and the skill<br />

development of body composition assessment techniques. Includes assessment issues, development of<br />

Specific/Measurable/Action-Oriented/Realistic/Time Bound (SMART) goals, program development, and special<br />

considerations.<br />

Prerequisite(s): FSS 234 or concurrent enrollment, and MAT 086 or satisfactory score on the Mathematics assessment<br />

test.<br />

Information: This course requires physical activity and is intended to students pursuing the Fitness Professional<br />

Certificate.<br />

FSS 279 Motor Development<br />

2 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lec.)<br />

Examination of development changes in motor patterns for children and adults. Includes introduction to motor<br />

development, prenatal development concerns, growth and maturation, infant reflexes and stereotypes, voluntary<br />

movements in infancy, perceptual-motor development, movement and changing sense of vision, cognitive and motor<br />

development and fine motor development. Also includes effects of early stimulation, social and motor development,<br />

psychological changes, motor assessment, and planning and conducting a motor development program.<br />

Prerequisite(s): FSS 243/243A/243B or concurrent enrollment.<br />

WRT 100 or 106.<br />

FSS 280 Lifestyle and Weight Management Consultant<br />

1 cr. hrs. 1 periods (1 lec.)<br />

Emphasis on evaluating fad diets, educating clients on proven techniques for weight loss (diet and exercise), and<br />

supporting clients with specific activities at various stages of change. Includes the trans-theoretical model, basic nutritional<br />

guidelines, exercise/activity guidelines and safety precautions, and developing personal strategies.<br />

Prerequisite(s): FSS 236 or concurrent enrollment.<br />

Information:<br />

This course is intended for the Fitness Professional program and continuing education for fitness professionals, coaches,<br />

and physical education teachers.<br />

Students must complete a Nutrition course at the 100 level or higher prior to, or concurrently with this course.<br />
