SLG 101 American Sign Language I<br />

4 cr. hrs. 6 periods (3 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Introduction to American Sign Language (ASL). Includes: parameters; syntax; sentence types; facial expressions and<br />

body language; pronominalization; nouns and verbs; modals; sign space; time line and time modulations; classifiers;<br />

pluralizations; and Deaf history and culture. Also includes: fingerspelling numbers; lexicalized fingerspelling; conceptual<br />

accuracy; sign modulation; conversational regulators; basic compounds and contractions; and existence of regional<br />

dialects/sign and language variations. Because language and culture are inextricably linked, this course will also<br />

demonstrate how ASL conveys the values, beliefs, customs, and history of American Deaf culture.<br />

Information:<br />

Students will be required to perform an additional 10 lab hours outside of the regular classroom schedule. This lab<br />

experience is designed to 1) provide a “signing only” environment for students to practice classroom skills with Deaf<br />

tutors; 2) expose students to communication in a Deaf environment; and 3) provide students with real life exposure to<br />

the Deaf community.<br />

This class is conducted primarily without voice.<br />

Offered: Fall, Spring, Summer.<br />

SIGN LANGUAGE<br />

SLG 102 American Sign Language II<br />

4 cr. hrs. 6 periods (3 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Continuation of SLG 101. Includes: parameters; syntax; sentence types; facial expression and body language; sign space;<br />

pronominalization; nouns/verbs; time line; classifiers; pluralizations; Deaf culture; and fingerspelling numbers. Also<br />

includes conceptual accuracy, modulations, sight line, lexicalized fingerspelling, contractions, direct address, conjunctions,<br />

model stories, history of sign, language variations, sign continuum, and how people hear. Because language and culture<br />

are inextricably linked, this course will also demonstrate how ASL conveys the values, beliefs, customs, and history of<br />

American Deaf culture.<br />

Prerequisite(s): SLG 101 with a grade of C or better.<br />

Information:<br />

Students will be required to perform ten additional lab hours outside of the regular schedule. The lab experience is<br />

designed to 1) provide a “signing only” environment for students to practice classroom skills with Deaf tutors; 2) expose<br />

students to communication in a Deaf environment; 3) provide students with real life exposure to the Deaf community.<br />

This class is conducted primarily without voice.<br />

SLG 201 American Sign Language III<br />

4 cr. hrs. 6 periods (3 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Continuation of SLG 102. Includes sentence order, modulation/inflection, prosody, sign space usage, conceptual accuracy,<br />

sign vocabulary, and Deaf culture and history. Because language and culture are inextricably linked, this course will also<br />

demonstrate how ASL conveys the values, beliefs, customs, and history of American Deaf culture.<br />

Prerequisite(s): SLG 102 with a grade of C or better.<br />

SLG 202 American Sign Language IV<br />

4 cr. hrs. 6 periods (3 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Continuation of SLG 201. Includes: use of sign space; conceptual accuracy; directionality; mimetic description; dialects;<br />

numerical applications; American Sign Language (ASL) expansions; English words with no direct ASL translation; English<br />

passive voice to ASL active voice; rendering ASL and English passages; current cultural issues; and the field of<br />

interpreting. Because language and culture are inextricably linked, this course will also demonstrate how ASL conveys the<br />

values, beliefs, customs, and history of American Deaf culture.<br />

Prerequisite(s): SLG 201 with a grade of C or better.<br />

SLG 296 Independent Study in Sign Language<br />

1-3 cr. hrs. 3-9 periods (3-9 lab)<br />

Exploration of special interest areas in sign language and Deaf cultures. Includes extensive practice of sign language skills<br />

and in depth study of Deaf cultures involving literature, grammar and special projects under the supervision of the<br />

instructor. Prerequiste(s): SLG 102.<br />

Information:<br />

Student must have consent of instructor.<br />

Course content and performance objectives will be determined by conference between student and instructional faculty.<br />
