HCE 250 Intravenous Medication Therapy for the LPN<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Techniques for licensed personnel to start, maintain, and discontinue intravenous (IV) therapy, such as peripheral<br />

venipuncture and to administer IV therapy with selected premixed medications and solutions under the direction of a<br />

registered nurse. Includes anatomy and physiology for the LPN.<br />

Corequisite(s): HCE 249<br />

Recommendation: Licensed Practical Nurse or consent of instructor before enrolling in this course.<br />

HCE 251 Initiating Intravenous Therapy<br />

1 cr. hrs. 1 periods (1 lec.)<br />

Theory and practice needed for the current LPN to start, maintain, and discontinue intravenous (IV) therapy (peripheral<br />

venipuncture) under the supervision of a registered nurse. Includes anatomy and physiology, sites for venipuncture, fluid<br />

replacement therapy, infusion equipment, intravenous solutions, flowrate of IV infusion, starting an IV infusion, nursing<br />

management of IV therapy, skills demonstration and practice, and clinical practice and certification.<br />

Recommendation: Licensed Practical Nurse or consent of instructor before enrolling in this course.<br />

HCE 253 Intravenous Medication Therapy for the Registered Nurse<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Techniques for the registered nurse to start, maintain, and discontinue intravenous (IV) therapy, such as peripheral<br />

venipuncture and to administer IV therapy. Includes principles of IV therapy, fluid balance in the body, local and systemic<br />

complications, therapy and patient care, medication delivery equipment, therapy monitoring and documentation, and skills<br />

demonstration. Also includes anatomy and physiology related to IV Therapy.<br />

Information: Registered Nurse or consent of instructor is required before enrolling in this course.<br />

An overview of health care delivery systems and mechanisms in the U.S. Includes the medical model of healthcare and<br />

delivery in the U.S, public policy, professional roles, legal and regulatory issues, ancillary services, health record and<br />

payment systems including the Electronic Health Record (EHR) and computer systems. Also includes health reform<br />

initiatives in the U.S.<br />

HIT 101 ICD-9 Coding I<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Overview of the International Classification of Diseases - 9th Edition (ICD-9) coding classification system. Includes<br />

terminology, principles and components of the ICD-9 coding system, codes for diseases and conditions, information from<br />

health records, and coding for highest specificity.<br />

Prerequisite(s): HIT 110 and OAP 162.<br />

Recommendation: Completion of HIT 100 and OAP 262, 263 is recommended before enrolling in the course.<br />

Information: Experience in the medical field may be substituted for the prerequisite and recommendations. See a fulltime<br />

OAP faculty member for details.<br />
